‘SNL': Colin Jost Breaks Seth Meyers’ ‘Weekend Update’ Hosting Record

Colin Jost made history this week on “Saturday Night Live.” The October 23 episode officially made him the longest running “Weekend Update” host, with 155 episodes under his belt.

The record had previously been held by “SNL” vet Seth Meyers, who finished his tenure behind the desk at 154 episodes. The now-late night host first auditioned to host “Weekend Update” in 2004, but lost out to Amy Poehler. Obviously, he eventually succeeded, and the pair began hosting together in 2006, coining some incredible bits like “Really!?! with Seth and Amy.”

When Poehler left the show in 2008, Meyers handled the weekly news segment solo, all the way up until 2013 when Cecily Strong joined him. Jost took over next to Strong when Meyers left to host “Late Night” in 2014. Michael Che replaced Strong later in 2014, kicking off season 40.

As of Sunday, Che is on track to shatter Meyers’ record soon too. Che has served as a “Weekend Update” host for roughly 147 episodes, topping even Tina Fey, who notched 117 episodes behind the desk.

Much like Poehler and Meyers, Jost and Che have come to be a beloved pair with some classic bits. Arguably the best one is their annual joke swap, where the hosts write jokes for each other for the news segment, without any kind of heads up on the content.

This week, Che and Jost welcomed Jason Sudeikis back to “Weekend Update,” where he reprised his character of The Devil. In the sketch, Sudeikis’ Prince of Hell made sure to take credit for some of the most annoying things people are dealing with today, including bitcoin, vaping, and that moment when you’re reading an article and an ad pops up to fill the screen first.

Sudeikis even got a good dig in at Jost, joking that he wasn’t sure who “screwed” Scarlett Johannson more — Disney or Jost.
