When Nathaniel Hackett was hired as coach of the Denver Broncos, he quickly put the motto “Win the West” on the walls at team headquarters and the front of players' T-shirts. The Broncos, however, are the only AFC team that hasn't won a divisional game yet. Heading into their game against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs (9-3) on Sunday, the Broncos (3-9) are already saddled with a sixth straight losing season and will miss their seventh consecutive playoffs.

The 24-year-old understands the chant is an honor and also a callback to retired Steelers tight end Heath Miller, who spent 11 seasons as Ben Roethlisberger's security blanket. The vast majority of Miller's 592 receptions were met with the crowd — no matter the venue — bellowing “Heeeeeeeeeath” after those receptions. Miller retired after the 2015 season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins forward prospect Sam Poulin is taking a leave of absence from the club's American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Penguins general manager Ron Hextall announced on Wednesday that the 21-year-old Poulin, Pittsburgh's first-round pick in the 2019 draft, is stepping away due to “personal reasons.” “The Penguins support Sam’s decision to take time away from hockey to focus on himself,” Hextall said in a release. “As with all of our players, our
Russian President Vladimir Putin has acknowledged that his army could be fighting in Ukraine for a long time, but for now there will be no second call-up of soldiers. Putin has rarely spoken about the likely duration of a war that he began more than nine months ago, and in a televised meeting with loyalists on Wednesday, he said, "This can be a long process." Russia has been forced into a series of significant retreats in the face of Ukrainian counter-offensives, waged with increasing stocks of Western weaponry, in the east and south since July.
A growing number of companies are making bulk purchases of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to reduce their carbon footprints, encouraging mass production of the cleaner energy that airlines need to meet their emissions targets. Airlines, travel agents and fuel producers are now offering corporate customers the opportunity to buy SAF not linked to individual flights, as companies go beyond cheaper carbon offset options like planting trees to reduce the environmental burden of flying. The industry move toward a "book and claim" accounting system like that used in the renewable electricity sector allows for greater flexibility given the relative scarcity of SAF, which uses feedstocks like cooking oils to reduce emissions by up to 80% from conventional fuel but is available only at limited airports globally.

OTTAWA — A First Nations child-welfare advocate says chiefs should ensure that "no child is left behind" in a landmark $40-billion settlement agreement with the federal government. Cindy Blackstock was invited to speak at a gathering of the Assembly of First Nations in Ottawa by Cindy Woodhouse, a regional chief of the organization. The AFN, representing more than 600 First Nations across the country, had asked the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal to approve the settlement deal, which would see th
STORY: U.S. stocks ended broadly lower on Wednesday, after a choppy session where investors struggled to find a clear direction following downbeat comments from the top bank executives, who said "a mild to hard recession" was likely ahead. The Dow finished flat. The S&P 500 fell fractionally but for the fifth straight session, while the Nasdaq lost half of a percent, closing down for the fourth session in a row. Fears over how long the Federal Reserve might stick to rate-hikes ahead of its policy meeting next week are likely to continue to weigh on the stock market, said George Ball, chairman of Sanders Morris Harris."The barometer of up or down is the expectation of Fed rate hikes: how soon, how much, for how long. And, right now, I think everyone accepts the notion of 50 basis points in a few days [and] probably 50 basis points sometime after that. And following those two moves by the Fed, nobody has the slightest idea. Will it be no recession? Slight recession? I think slight recession is the consensus. But that's all baked into the market. And, so, really for the last two weeks with a couple of dramatic up days and down days as the exceptions, the market is leaderless, rudderless and aimless."Shares of energy companies fell, weighed down by another slump in oil prices, which settled at the lowest level in 2022, as concerns over the outlook for global growth wiped out all of this year's gains.Shares of Apple fell after Morgan Stanley cut its estimates for iPhone shipments for the holiday quarter.Shares of Tesla lost more than 3% amid concerns of disruptions at its factory in Shanghai, where fewer cars than expected could roll off production lines this month. And, finally, shares of Carvana lost nearly half their value after Wedbush Securities downgraded the used-car retailer's stock to "underperform" from "neutral" and slashed its price target to $1.

Indiana sued Chinese-owned short-video sharing app TikTok on Wednesday over allegations that it is deceiving users about China's access to their data and exposing children to mature content. The office of Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, a Republican, said the popular app, owned by ByteDance, violates the state's consumer protection laws by not disclosing the Chinese government's potential to access sensitive consumer information. TikTok also deceived young users and their parents with its age rating of 12-plus in Apple's and Google's app stores, Rokita's office said in a complaint filed on Wednesday.
