Watch Michael Fassbender Play a Tough Guy Cowboy in the Trippy Trailer for 'Slow West'

For a German-Irish guy, Michael Fassbender makes a pretty great American cowboy.

The X-Men actor and future Steve Jobs stars as a stoic, bounty-hunting cowpoke in Slow West, the first trailer for which you can watch above. The movie premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where its unique combination of gorgeous western vistas and trippy, occasionally surreal action earned largely positive reviews.

Slow West stars Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as Jay Cavendish, a young, heartbroken Scottish man who ventures to the United States in pursuit of his girlfriend (Brooke Williams) and her father after the pair flee the UK. What he doesn’t know is that there’s a price on their heads, which puts him in some serious competition with a bunch of ruthless bounty hunters who aren’t exactly concerned about reuniting two young lovers.

Jay is also unprepared for the rigors of surviving the vast, treacherous terrain of the American frontier, which makes for an extremely dangerous journey, especially with murderers on his trail. Luckily, he crosses paths with Selleck (played by Fassbender), who’s short on words and long on grit.

Maclean’s film is actually very funny, despite not being an out-and-out comedy, with some great sight gags and a finely tuned sense of the bizarre; it’s filled with non-sequitor scenes, and an appropriately slow-speed pace, making it one of spring’s potential breakouts. Slow West hits theaters on May 15 after a run on DirecTV.
