Sir David Attenborough has quit Instagram exactly two months after breaking records when he joined.

The veteran broadcaster joined the social media platform in September, aiming to spread his message warning about climate change to a new audience.

But today his bio reads “account no longer active”.

Reports have claimed, though, that it will still be directing his 6.2million followers to other accounts.

In Sir David’s last post, he said: “And that’s it. I’ve passed on the things I wanted to share. There are others on social media who can pick up the threads from here.

“We have brought ourselves onto the brink of disaster the likes of which we have never seen before. I’ve witnessed it with my own eyes.”

Sir David had broken Jennifer Aniston’s record to become the fastest Instagram user to reach one million followers.

The 94-year-old managed to hit the one million milestone in just four hours.

In the clip, he explained that “saving our planet is now a communications challenge.”

“I am making this move and exploring this new way of communication to me because, as we all know, the world is in trouble,” he said.

Frequent collaborators Jonnie Hughes and Colin Butfield, who worked on Sir David’s upcoming film and book – both titled A Life On Our Planet – had helped manage his account.

In the video, they said: "Social media isn't David's usual habitat so while he's recorded messages solely for Instagram, like the one in this post, we're helping to run this account."

Sir David then says: "I've been appearing on radio and television for the past 60 years, but this is my first time on Instagram.

"As we all know, the world is in trouble. Continents are on fire. Glaciers are melting. Coral reefs are dying. Fish are disappearing from our oceans. The list goes on.

Guinness World records then confirmed that Attenborough had set a new record, writing on his first post: “Congratulations Sir David - a new record for the fastest time to reach one million followers on Instagram.”

This record was in turn destroyed by Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, debuted on the social media platform on November 10 and reached the million milestone in four hours and one minute.
