Sigourney Weaver is back for Avatar 2 and producer Jon Landau has revealed a photo of the legendary actor on the movie’s set.

Weaver portrayed Dr Grace Augustine in the 2009 original and the character was killed when she was shot by Stephen Lang’s villainous Colonel Quaritch.

Director James Cameron said in 2014 that Weaver is playing “a different and in many ways more challenging character” in the sequels, explaining how she can appear despite her death first time around.

The film’s official Twitter account shared an image from the set of the sequels, featuring producer Jon Landau, Weaver and Joel David Moore, who is reprising his role as Dr Norm Spellman.

Avatar 2 halted production in New Zealand last month as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Work on the film, however, is set to continue as much as effects house Weta Digital can manage in the current situation.

Weaver is not the only cast member who’s returning to Avatar 2 despite her death in the first one, with Stephen Lang set to return despite Quaritch’s violent, definitive end in the film.

Lang said: “I’m working now with a much broader canvas than I was with the first Avatar, and it keeps me in concert with James Cameron to really go to town and examine the character in detail.”

Fans of the original Avatar, which was until recently the highest-grossing movie of all time, have been anticipating Cameron’s planned sequels for years.

Numerous delays have scuppered the production on numerous occasions, but the continuation of the story is set to hit cinemas next year.

Avatar 2 is currently set to land in cinemas in December 2021, with three further sequels coming in the Decembers of 2023, 2025 and 2027.
