Yahoo Movies Shrek 5 gets release date with original cast returning
Shrek 5 has officially landed a 2026 release date.
DreamWorks Animation has confirmed that the fifth instalment of the Shrek series will hit cinemas on July 1, 2026 — some 16 years after the previous movie Shrek Forever After opened in 2010.
A short teaser for Shrek 5 (which you can see by clicking here) has also announced that the original voice cast — Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona) and Eddie Murphy (Donkey) — will be reprising their classic roles.
Walt Dohrn, who worked on Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After, will be co-directing Shrek 5 along with Brad Ableson (Minions: The Rise of Gru).
Eddie Murphy previously confirmed that Shrek 5 was in production in June by revealing he'd already recorded some of his voice acting, in addition to working on a Donkey spinoff.

"I recorded the first act, and we'll be doing it this year, we'll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie. We're gonna do Donkey as well," he told Collider.
"So we're gonna do a Shrek, and we're doing a Donkey [movie]."
Murphy later clarified that the two films weren't being produced simultaneously, so work on the proposed Donkey spinoff would follow Shrek 5's 2026 release.
DreamWorks often teased a fifth Shrek film was in the works over the last decade, but it wasn't until 2023 that there were solid reports of the original cast returning.

On top of the four previous Shrek movies, the franchise has branched off with Antonio Banderas' Puss in Boots and the 2022 sequel Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
The Shrek series' star-studded voice cast also features John Lithgow as the scheming Lord Farquaad, John Cleese as King Harold, and Jennifer Saunders as the Fairy Godmother.
Shrek 5 will release on July 1, 2026.
