Shelters in the storm: Here are safe spaces in Raleigh during Hurricane Ian and overnight

Several shelters will be open this weekend in Wake County for people who need it during Hurricane Ian.

The Wake County Continuum of Care has partnered with the county and City of Raleigh to ensure locations stay open overnight and throughout the day on Friday and Saturday.

Some of the shelters will open at 10 a.m. on Friday and will stay open throughout the weekend.

The White Flag Emergency Shelter is open to everyone and has ample supplies of blankets, toiletries and bedding. The Salvation Army on Capital Boulevard is also open overnight and is typically for families with children.

“The county provides us with cots and some bedding. We have bedding that was provided to the shelter last year that we keep on hand,” said Vance Haywood, pastor of St. John’s Metropolitan Community Church in Raleigh. “We don’t expect to run to capacity.”

The overnight shelters are slated to only be open for Friday night, but if needed, they will be open overnight Saturday night, Haywood said.

“Whether it shifts or if things look different, we’re monitoring it, so we could call tomorrow night,” he said.

He said the shelter is equipped to care for about 150 people. The church also has over 900 blankets they will distribute at the overnight shelter as needed, Haywood said.

• 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• 112 S. Salisbury St., Raleigh

Oak City Cares

• 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
