Shazam 2 star calls out "senselessly mean" criticism of DC sequel

Shazam! Fury of the Gods' Rachel Zegler had a very clear message for haters of the latest DC film.

The West Side Story star plays Atlas' daughter Anthea/Anne in the movie from director David F Sandberg. Together with her sisters Kalypso and Hespera, Anthea fights Zachary Levi's titular superhero and his foster siblings in an epic showdown.

Premiered on March 17, the Shazam! sequel received mixed reviews, currently sitting at a 52% critic score on movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score of 88% at the time of writing tells a different story and offered Zegler a springboard to rebuke detractors.

"hey our film is actually really good! but mostly i just absolutely loved making it and the people i met whilst doing so :) go see it! give it a chance," she tweeted on March 19, adding some behind-the-scenes snaps with her co-stars Lucy Liu, Helen Mirren and Jack Dylan Grazer.

"we have an 85% audience score for a reason."

Zegler continued: "some people out there and just being… senselessly mean. and it's unnecessary.

"and i know, i know, 'if you can't handle the heat…' and all that nonsense, and you're right. but our film is actually very good. it's just cool to hate on fun nowadays. that's okay. we're good."

Zegler, who recently went viral for her honest response about what drew her to the role of Anthea ("I needed a job"), will be next seen in the hotly-anticipated Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Based on the 2020 novel of the same name by Hunger Games series author Suzanne Collins, the film will be released in November this year.
