Logan Couture says he was sucker punched for supporting Republicans

San Jose Sharks captain Logan Couture logged onto Twitter early Wednesday morning, claiming he was sucker punched in Toronto for “mentioning” Donald Trump and discussing his support for the Republican Party.

The tweet, which kicked off a storm of just utter absurdity online, was later deleted, but of course it was screenshotted for posterity as it remained live for most of Wednesday afternoon.

Very oddly, Couture would later add that he doesn’t vote — he’s Canadian and not eligible to vote in the U.S.

Couture was asked by a Twitter user what the point of his original tweet was, and why did he get punched for something as simple as expressing a political opinion.

Couture offered a somewhat unclear response, noting that his dad was a police officer. After further examination by Twitter user @uheeuhaha, Couture’s father Chet indeed served as a police officer for eight years but more recently served as a firefighter.

So, yes, this is all pretty confusing, but basically Couture is claiming he was “sucker punched” for simply discussing politics and mentioning Trump’s name.

“I’ve learned that. I’ll never talk politics in public again. Just crazy to me, if you speak your own opinion violence happens. Even crazier, people are okay with it.” he later tweeted.

It remains unconfirmed whether the punch actually happened. The Toronto Police Service did not have any information to share about the allegations, according to Global News. Couture declined to offer any further comment or explanation to The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz.

The internet offered mixed reactions, with some offering Couture their sympathies for (allegedly) getting punched while the vast majority just completely and justifiably shredded him for a variety of reasons.

He did eventually seem to realize this was all pretty ridiculous later on Wednesday, tweeting out a statement in which he clarified that he “does not believe in supporting Donald Trump” and said he was sorry for miswording some of the thoughts he meant to get across.

For what it’s worth, the Sharks also put out a statement defending Couture and condemning whoever allegedly punched their captain.

Hope Couture is okay and we don’t support people getting punched for expressing an opinion, but just, like, read the room man.
