Sex Education spoilers follow.

Sex Education star Asa Butterfield has discussed upcoming changes in the fourth season of the hit Netflix show.

The Otis Milburn actor will return to the role for the upcoming instalment, which will see the Moordale gang navigating a new environment — and meeting new people.

"I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to tease," Butterfield told RadioTimes.com.

"But we're in the new school, new locations, and things have changed up a bit. And we've got some new characters."

The star, whose new holiday movie Your Christmas or Mine? recently dropped on Prime Video, also noted that Sex Education has "evolved" since its first season, which premiered on Netflix in January 2019.

"The show's definitely sort of evolved somewhat," said Butterfield. "But it's still got the core team involved and it's been fun. I mean, we all know each other so well at this point, so it's a great time and it's a laugh."

Butterfield's co-star Aimee Lou Wood, who plays Aimee Gibbs on the Netflix show, recently echoed his feelings. Last month, she spoke to Digital Spy about the new elements and the impact on her character.

"The characters feel like they're in very new territory because they literally are. They're at a new school," said Wood.

She also weighed in on Aimee feeling a little lonely in season 4. Following her breakup with Steve Morley (Chris Jenks), Aimee is single for the first time in a while. Plus, her best pal Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey) is off to study in the US.

"There's a lot of newness for all of the characters, and I think that that does make the show feel very new," Wood added.

Mackey's role will be slightly scaled down in season 4, and stars of previous seasons have already said goodbye to Sex Education. To fill the gaps, new characters will be introduced.

Among the season 4 additions are Thomas Malloy, an author who is also Maeve's new tutor, played by Schitt's Creek actor Dan Levy.

Sex Education season 4 is expected to be in production until February 2023, meaning that we may not get to see Otis and co. return before late 2023 or early 2024.

Sex Education seasons 1-3 are streaming on Netflix. Season 4 is currently in production.
