Serbia vs Switzerland LIVE: World Cup 2022 score and result as Swiss win thriller to reach last 16

Switzerland powered past Serbia 3-2 in their final World Cup Group G match to advance to the last 16 for the third straight time following an enthralling contest.

The win sealed second spot in the group with six points, level with group winners Brazil, and the Swiss will next face Portugal for a place in the quarter-finals.

Switzerland took the lead through Xherdan Shaqiri’s deflected shot in the 20th minute, making the winger nicknamed ‘the pocket rocket’ the first player from his country to score at three World Cups. Their joy only lasted six minutes with Serbia, needing a win to have any chance of progressing, scoring twice through Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic to turn the game around.

But Switzerland responded with a two goals either side of the break from Breel Embolo and Remo Freuler to prolong their stay in Qatar while eliminating the Serbs.

Cameroon vs Brazil conclusion

21:07 , Luke Baker

Here’s the key final stages from Cameroon vs Brazil, when Vincent Aboubakar scored what would proved to be the winner and then got a second yellow card for taking his shirt off in celebration...

Cameroon ultimately fell just short of qualification despite the win, coming third in Group G.

Tempers boiling over

21:05 , Luke Baker

Here’s the moment tempers boiled over towards the end of the match. The only surprise is that it didn’t happen earlier. A largely even-tempered game.

Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

21:02 , Luke Baker

Emotions still running high after the full-time whistle as Granit Xhaka has an angry conversation with a Serbian player. Xhaka is from an ethnic Albanian family who lived in Kosovo, remember, so there’s always political tension when he faces Serbia.

FULL-TIME! Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:59 , Luke Baker

And that’s it! An absolutely thrilling first half, before Remo Freuler got what proved to be the winner just after the break and Switzerland are into the last 16 to face Portugal.

If they play like this, they could really give the Portuguese a game.

Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:56 , Luke Baker

90+4 mins: Players losing their heads now. Something happens between Xhaka and Milinkovic-Savic, there’s some pushing and shoving, the likes of Embolo and Mitrovic gets involved and there’s some afters by the advertsing hoardings.

When it eventually calms down, Xhaka gets a yellow card. Embolo subbed off shortly after, perhaps to protect him. Final knockings here.

Brazil vs Cameroon

20:54 , Luke Baker

There’s a goal in the other game, right at the death. Vincent Aboubakar scores in the 92nd minute to put Cameroon 1-0 up and he then gets sent off for taking his shirt off in the celebration!

It doesn’t change anything at the moment but it would send Cameroon through at Switzerland’s expense if Serbia score... A few minutes of added time left.

SAVE! Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:50 , Luke Baker

89 mins: That could have been game over. Fernandes picks out Fassnacht in plenty of space on the left with a great ball. Milinkovic-Savic comes out quickly, makes himself big and save one on one. A really good chance squandered by Fassnacht

There’ll be 7 minutes of added time.

Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:46 , Luke Baker

86 mins: Good defending by Rodriguez as he shepherds the ball out of play with Radonjic all over the back of him.

This has been a masterclass in neutering a game since they went 3-2 up. The first half was far more entertaining but this is impressive in its own right.

CLOSE! Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:43 , Luke Baker

83 mins: Before the free-kick is taken, Mitrovic gets a yellow card for dissent. He’s still jabbering at the referee even after the booking.

A decent free-kick routine that ends with Akanji curling the ball round the wall but it’s into the side netting. Didn’t quite curl enough although some of the crowd thought it was in, judging by the cheers.

Christian Fassnacht on for Switzerland

Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:41 , Luke Baker

81 mins: I know he may not have been fully fit but Serbia have lost a presence up front since Vlahovic was subbed off and they haven’t threatened in the same way. Similarly, the incredibly impressive Tadic coming off was a slight surprise although he was looking a bit tired.

Duricic is absolutely livid at the referee making him go to the sidelines to get treatment but he’s bleeding under his eye after contact in an aerial challenge.

Embolo wins a free-kick right on the edge of the area for Switzerland and Gudelj goes into the referee’s book.

Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:38 , Luke Baker

77 mins: Last throw of the dice from Serbia as they chuck on Nemanja Radonjic and Filip Duricic in search of the two goals they need. It’s Tadic and Zivkovic who are subbed off.

Brazil vs Cameroon

20:35 , Luke Baker

I should say, it’s still 0-0 between Brazil and Cameroon. A Cameroon goal would make things interesting as it would put Switzerland just one Serbia goal away from crashing out. At the moment they have a buffer in this game and that one.

Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:34 , Luke Baker

75 mins: Switzerland are doing a good job of game management after the carnage that has pervaded most of this contest. Serbia are slightly running out of ideas you feel, and they’re definitely running out of time.

There’s a lot of white shirts behind the ball every time the Serbs try to start an attack.

Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:31 , Luke Baker

70 mins: Balls into the box even more the order of the day for Serbia now. Mitrovic rises high to try and get on the end of one but it’s over his head and he may have been a touch too physical with the defender anyway.

20 minutes left and they need two goals. Switzerland have a bit of breathing room as long as they lead.

Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:27 , Luke Baker

67 mins: Does feel like Serbia were wasting their own time with that nonsense, but there you go. They now make a sub as Nemanja Maksimovic comes on for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. He doesn’t look thrilled with that to be honest...

Switzerland also get in on the sub action as Denis Zakaria and Edimilson Fernandes on for Shaqiri and Sow.

Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:26 , Luke Baker

65 mins: Serbia want a penalty. A nice one-two between Tadic and Mitrovic, the latter then goes down theatrically, claiming a shirt pull from Schar. The referee isn’t interested and replays prove him right.

The Serbian bench aren’t happy and the subs start coming on to the pitch at the next stoppage in play when there’s a bit of afters between a couple of players.

Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:24 , Luke Baker

63 mins: A poor throw-in by Rodriguez gives Serbia possession and they work it well. Kostic puts a cross in from the left, looking for that corridor of uncertainty again but this time Kobel dives out and smothers the ball with a couple of forwards lurking behind him.

Getting balls into the box from wide areas has been their tactic all day.

WATCH: Freuler finishes brilliant move

20:21 , Luke Baker

Here’s how the Swiss retook the lead as Remo Freuler finished a glorious move

CHANCE! Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:20 , Luke Baker

60 mins: Again Serbia create an opportunity. Kostic switches the play from left to right, a cross back into the box comes to Tadic in a bit of space at the back post but he blazes over. More composure needed.

Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:19 , Luke Baker

59 mins: A great ball swung in from the Serbia left but runs all the way through. More quality like that and Serbia will soon find the equaliser you’d think. Switzerland trying to manage the game now but it’s still pretty open.

MISS! Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:17 , Luke Baker

56 mins: HOW HAS EMBOLO MISSED THAT?! A ball into the box calls all kinds of havoc in the Serbian defence. Akanji makes a great run and the ball falls to Embolo inside six yards but he spoons it over the bar.

An offside flag does go up but what a miss.

Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:16 , Luke Baker

54 mins: Serbia make a double change. They sort of have to do something, even though they haven’t struggled to find goals so far.

Nemanja Gudelj and Luka Jovic (the latter being another targetman) come on to the pitch. Vlahovic off along with Veljkovic.

Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

20:12 , Luke Baker

51 mins: This match has been absolutely incredible. Can Serbia find another response? In any other game, you’d say finding two more goals feels like an uphill task but in this match...

Bodies on the line stuff here as Embolo and Pavlovic come crashing together. Embolo may have come off the worse there.

GOAL! Serbia 2-3 Switzerland (Freuler 48’)

20:08 , Luke Baker

And we pick up where we left off in the first half. Switzerland score immediately!

Embolo gets to a long ball first, it’s then so intricate in the area as Vargas produces an exquisite backheel flick that bounces up perfectly for the onrushing Freuler to smash into the net. Glorious play and Switzerland in control of this one.

Serbia 2-2 Switzerland

20:07 , Luke Baker

47 mins: Back underway at Stadium 974. An early booking for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as he goes through Xhaka. Fully deserved

WATCH: Embolo equalises with simple finish

20:03 , Luke Baker

A great cross and simple finish from Embolo then made it 2-2 before the break. What a half!

WATCH: Vlahovic puts Serbs in front

20:00 , Luke Baker

A lovely finish from Vlahovic then had Serbia on top

WATCH: Shaqiri gets first goal of the game

19:54 , Luke Baker

Right, some first-half highlights. Starting with Xherdan Shqiri’s strike to make it 1-0 Switzerland. But there was plenty more to come...

HALF-TIME! Serbia 2-2 Switzerland

19:51 , Luke Baker

WOW! What a first half of football. Four goals and at the end of it all, Switzerland are currently heading through.

They led 1-0 through Xherdan Shaqiri’s strike but Aleksandar Mitrovic’s header and Dusan Vlahovic’s neat finish turned the game around before Breel Embolo equalised just before half-time.

The best opening 45 minutes of the World Cup so far? Hopefully not the end of the drama either.

Serbia 2-2 Switzerland

19:49 , Luke Baker

45+2 mins: Boo! Only three minutes of injury time at the end of the half. I’d have happily watched another 10 minutes of this.

A half-hearted appeal for handball in the area from Serbia but nothing doing.

GOAL! Serbia 2-2 Switzerland (Embolo 44’)

19:45 , Luke Baker

WHAT. A. GAME And now it’s Switzerland going through as it stands...

It’s too easy really. One nice ball out to the overlapping Widmer on the right and Serbia are cut open. The full-back has all day to slide a cross into the gaping hole between the defence and the goalkeeper where Embolo gets in front of his man and turns the ball in. Simple football, well executed, to level it up.

Unreal game!

Serbia 2-1 Switzerland

19:43 , Luke Baker

41 mins: That Vlahovic goal means it’s now Serbia going through second in this group. But a goal for either Cameroon or Switzerland would change that!

This World Cup group stage has been great - so much drama. Good thing Fifa are changing the format for 2026, eh...

Serbia 2-1 Switzerland

19:40 , Luke Baker

39 mins: YES! If no other part of your body is free, use your face to block a shot! Pavlovic does exactly that as he throws himself at a shot that Vargas catches full-blooded from 20 yards and it flies out of play.

Pavlovic is absolutely ecstatic with that. He loved it. Proper defending!

GOAL! Serbia 2-1 Switzerland (Vlahovic 35’)

19:35 , Luke Baker

Turnaround complete! It’s now 2-1. Superb stuff.

It comes from a loose pass by Shaqiri that Tadic seizes upon. Everything has come through him so far. He slips a reverse pass between two defenders as Vlahovic runs across him.

Another defender slides but can’t clear the ball and Vlahovic flicks the ball back across his body, beyond Kobel. It’s a brilliant finish that he had no right to find. The Juventus man starting up front paying dividends.

Serbia 1-1 Switzerland

19:34 , Luke Baker

33 mins: This has been a completely breathless first half. After all the drama, Switzerland are going through as it stands but one goal from Serbia would change that.

Ruben Vargas gets booked for a lunge on Zivkovic - it’s fair enough to be honest.

CHANCE! Serbia 1-1 Switzerland

19:32 , Luke Baker

30 mins: Should that have been 2-1?! A stunning cross-field ball frees Shaqiri and he’s in on goal from the left but only finds the side netting with his shot. To be fair, Veljkovic got back and slid across to put him off.

What a match this is! You can keep your Brazil vs Cameroon...

GOAL! Serbia 1-1 Switzerland (Mitrovic ‘26)

19:27 , Luke Baker

Serbia equalise and if we’re playing the ‘who else could it have been’ game, then, well - here’s Mitrovic...

They drive forward down the left, the impressive Tadic takes it on and floats a gorgeous cross towards the penalty spot where Mitrovic loses his marker and flicks a header beyond Kobel into the right-hand corner. Great header - he created the power with his neck but also a sumptuous ball in.

Serbia 0-1 Switzerland

19:25 , Luke Baker

24 mins: It had to be Xherdan Shaqiri really with the goal. He didn’t strike it completely cleanly, I think he was aiming for the far corner, but got enough on it to bobble it into the near corner.

Serbia need to respond and find two goals now to keep their qualification hopes alive.

GOAL! Serbia 0-1 Switzerland (Shaqiri 20’)

19:20 , Luke Baker

The Swiss take the lead against the run of play! Who else but Shaqiri.

Great work by Rodriguez down the left and his dangerous cross is only cleared to Sow, who helps it on to Shaqiri and the Swiss man cuts in on his left foot and fires a shot through bodies into the corner.

A ‘shhhh’ celebration from Shaqiri, who was born in Serbia and celebrated much more provocatively when he scored against them in the World Cup four years ago...

Switzerland safely heading through as it stands.

Serbia 0-0 Switzerland

19:20 , Luke Baker

19 mins: Kostic having plenty of joy down the left as he gets beyond Widmer again before having his cross cleared. Widmer is already on a yellow card so has to be careful and Serbia look keen to exploit that.

Serbia 0-0 Switzerland

19:19 , Luke Baker

18 mins: Serbia win another corner but it’s well defended again. Then there’s clever link-up play between Tadic and Kostic on the left, with the latter able to burst into the box but Switzerland scramble men across to crowd him out.

Serbia showing some nice touches here and have come closest to opening the scoring.

Serbia 0-0 Switzerland

19:16 , Luke Baker

15 mins: Tadic puts in the free-kick towards Milinkovic-Savic but it’s headed away by the Swiss defence and safely out for a throw.

Serbia 0-0 Switzerland

19:16 , Luke Baker

14 mins: Brilliant play for Embolo as he turns on the halfway line, slips between two defenders and plays the ball wide to Vargas. His low cross is hit by Sow but blocked away by Serbia.

This is brilliant end-to-end stuff. At the other end, Widmer gets a yellow card for hauling down Kostic on the left.

POST! Serbia 0-0 Switzerland

19:12 , Luke Baker

10 mins: Serbia hit the post! Tadic does good work on the right, flicks the ball back to Zivkovic who cuts in and his thumping effort from outside the box beats Kobel but cannons back off the left post.

The rebound falls to Mitrovic but he doesn’t know much about it and a grateful Kobel is able to jump on it.

Serbia 0-0 Switzerland

19:10 , Luke Baker

9 mins: Tadic gets to the by-line and somehow fumbles his way through a couple of defenders as the ball just about stays in but eventually it cannons out off him for a goal-kick.

Serbia 0-0 Switzerland

19:08 , Luke Baker

8 mins: A ball floated into the box by Vargas looking for Embolo but Milinkovic-Savic claims it well. Good goalkeeping. A compelling start to this game and Switzerland will be ruing that early missed chance.

Serbia 0-0 Switzerland

19:05 , Luke Baker

4 mins: Now Serbia spring forward. A dangerous ball into the box is headed away before Tadic wins a corner. He swings it in himself, Milenkovic rises highest but his header goes just wide.

A really lively start to this game.

SAVE! Serbia 0-0 Switzerland

19:02 , Luke Baker

1 mins: What a start by Switzerland! Immediately on the attack and one shot is blocked before the ball falls to Embolo about eight yards out but Milinkovic-Savic makes himself big to make the save. A Shaqiri follow-up then goes wide.

Dramatic start!

KICK-OFF! Serbia 0-0 Switzerland

Not long until kick-off now. Here’s a reminder of the teams this evening.

Xherdan Shaqiri, Granit Xhaka and Ricardo Rodriguez are each making their 11th appearance for Switzerland at the World Cup today - the most among Swiss players in the history of the competition. Goalkeeper Yann Sommer is out ill, so Gregor Kobel starts instead.

Serbia coach Dragan Stojkovic has opted to start two strikers in attack with both Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic leading the line. Serbia must win to stand any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages and Stojkovic has handed Vlahovic his first start after he returned to full fitness.

Serbia XI: V Milinkovic-Savic, Milenkovic, Veljkovic, Pavlovic, Zivkovic, S Milinkovic-Savic, Lukic, Kostic, Tadic, Mitrovic, Vlahovic

Switzerland XI: Kobel, Widmer, Akanji, Schar, Rodriguez, Freuler, Xhaka, Shaqiri, Sow, Vargas, Embolo

Serbia vs Switzerland facts and stats

18:51 , Luke Baker

Here are some pre-match facts and stats for you to digest.

  • The two sides met at the 2018 World Cup where the Swiss came from behind to win 2-1 thanks to a 90th-minute winning goal from Xherdan Shaqiri.

  • Serbia have lost their final group stage match at their last three World Cup participations as an independent nation - conceding at least twice in each defeat.

  • Switzerland meanwhile have not lost their final group game in any of their last four World Cups (W2 D2).

  • But after their 1-0 defeat to Brazil, they are looking to avoid consecutive losses at the World Cup for the first time since 1994 (losing to Colombia and Spain).

  • Serbia’s draw with Cameroon was the first time they have scored three in any World Cup match. If they can do that today but avoid conceding three, then they could very well be lining up against Portugal in the last 16 on Tuesday evening.

Serbia boss tells team to ‘decide on our destiny’ against Switzerland

18:47 , Luke Baker

Serbia coach Dragan Stojkovic has vowed to get on the front foot and attack Switzerland in his side’s decisive final World Cup group game on Friday.

Serbia, with just one point from two games, must beat the Swiss to have any hope of progressing to the last 16 at Qatar 2022.

Even with a victory, their fate will rest on the result of the other Group G match between Brazil and Cameroon, but Stojkovic at least wants to go down fighting.

“It is going to be a difficult match, but we need to decide on our destiny,” said Stojkovic, whose side surrendered a 3-1 lead to draw 3-3 with Cameroon last time out. “Have no dilemma, we will do our best.

“You can’t win if you don’t attack. We intend to play attacking football without forgetting to defend ourselves.”

Last time out: Casemiro provides Brazil relief in Neymar absence to edge past Switzerland

18:40 , Luke Baker

“We can’t stop talking about Neymar,” Casemiro had said in the build-up to this latest stop on Brazil’s quest to win a sixth World Cup. After his winning goal here against Switzerland, they’ll only be talking about him.

With the side’s talismanic No 10 injured and watching wave after wave of pressure go unrewarded from afar, it was left to the defensive midfielder with just five international goals to his name to do his best impression of the absent hero with 75.

The strike was a sweet one, struck hard and to Yann Sommer’s left, the Swiss keeper left with no chance as it arrowed into the corner. The relief in the stadium – and no doubt the team hotel where the laid-up Neymar was watching on – was palpable.

He will play again at this World Cup, Tite insists, but in what condition remains to be seen, the treatment on the injured ankle that reduced him to tears in the final minutes against Serbia set to continue to the end of the group stages at the very least.

Thanks to Casemiro, the team he leaves behind are in the knockout rounds with a game to spare, though, after a 1-0 win at Stadium 974 that for so long looked like would elude them.

Last time out: Cameroon score two quick-fire goals to claim point in thriller against Serbia

18:34 , Luke Baker

Serbia have got used to doing things the hard way on their road to Qatar. The Eagles came from behind three times on their journey to this World Cup, including a last-gasp, finals-sealing winner against Portugal in Lisbon back in November of last year. Now, after a rollercoaster 3-3 draw with Cameroon, they will have to go to the well again if they are to progress from Group G, wrote Ben Burrows from Al Janoub Stadium.

Fancied by many as a dark horse at this tournament, a two-goal second-half lead thrown away here at the Al Janoub Stadium could cost them dear as they look to make it to the last-16 for the first time this century, goals from Strahinja Pavlovic, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Aleksandar Mitrovic cancelled out by a furious Vincent Aboubakar-inspired comeback.

The Indomitable Lions have life themselves now too, even with Brazil looming, this another brilliant, courageous display by an African nation in Doha, following so closely in the footsteps of Morocco a day ago, sealing a first World Cup point since 2002.

For Serbia, the deeply emotional clash with political rivals Switzerland in their final game of this stage is now burnished with an added layer of meaning it scarcely needed.

Is Serbia vs Switzerland on TV? Kick-off time, channel and where to watch World Cup fixture

18:25 , Luke Baker

Serbia and Switzerland will battle it out for a spot in the last 16 of the Qatar World Cup, while possibly hoping for a little help from elsewhere in Group G.

Serbia come into the game with a point to their name, having fallen to Brazil before drawing with Ghana in a thriller.

Meanwhile, Switzerland are better positioned to join Brazil in the knockout rounds, having beaten Cameroon before coming up short against the Selecao.

Switzerland would advance with a win here, while a Serbia victory by a three-goal margin would send them through if Brazil simultaneously defeat Cameroon. If Cameroon upset the Brazilians and Serbia win by three goals, then it will come down to goal difference between the African side and Serbia. If Switzerland draw and Cameroon win, then goal difference or goals scored will be what splits those two teams.

Here’s all you need to know.

Group G permutations

18:15 , Luke Baker

So what are the permutations in Group G, and specifically this match, this evening?

Brazil are already through on six points and will likely top the group, even with Tite making nine changes to his starting XI against Cameroon.

Switzerland will qualify with a win over Serbia and a draw would also be enough providing Cameroon don’t beat Brazil. They will be eliminated with a loss.

Serbia have to win to stand any chance of qualifying. If they do that and Cameroon fail to beat Brazil, then Serbia are through. If Cameroon also win, then Serbia would need to win by a greater margin of goals than the African side.

It should be a fascinating evening.

Serbia vs Switzerland team news

18:07 , Luke Baker

What are the headlines from those teams being announced?

Serbia coach Dragan Stojkovic opted to start two strikers in attack with both Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic leading the line.

With just one point from their first two games, Serbia must win to stand any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages and Stojkovic handed Vlahovic his first start after he returned to full fitness.

Breel Embolo, Switzerland’s only goalscorer at the tournament so far, starts up front again while midfielders Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri also start. Both players scored in Switzerland’s comeback win over Serbia in the 2018 tournament.

Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer misses out, however, after the Borussia Moenchengladbach player fell ill.

Serbia vs Switzerland

17:47 , Luke Baker

After that double heartbreak for Ghana and Uruguay, our attention will now be turning to Group G - specifically Serbia vs Switzerland, with both teams still able to qualify.

We’ll have team news shorty.

Luis Suarez sent crashing out of World Cup as Ghana get revenge but not progress

17:37 , Luke Baker

It was put to Luis Suarez that he is seen as “the devil himself” in Ghana, his role in Uruguay’s infamous quarter-final win over them 12 years ago still as searingly controversial now as it was back then. A country back home, he was told, was desperate to retire him here in Qatar, to bring, at last, a measure of retribution and revenge against him for his crime against them, writes Ben Burrows at the Al Janoub Stadium

Fast forward 24 hours and Suarez is indeed going home as they so wanted, his career at this very top level almost certainly over for good. They, though, are joining him, South Korea’s last-gasp win over Portugal, sending both of these teams crashing out, the result here at Al Janoub one of mutually assured destruction.

Two goals from Giorgian de Arrascaeta secured the victory Uruguay needed to have any chance of qualifying. That they would need a third wasn’t apparent until the last, Hwang Hee-chan’s stoppage time goal scored less than 30km away proving more crucial than any scored here.

This World Cup journey is at end for both of these teams, the 2-0 victory for La Celeste not enough as Korea instead advance by the barest of margins behind Portugal.

For Suarez, heartbroken and helpless on the bench, it was far from the final act he had hoped for, or one for so long here he had promised to deliver.

Report from the other Group H game: Hwang Hee-Chan strikes dramatic winner to send South Korea through after beating Portugal

17:31 , Luke Baker

Just as the PA system announced six minutes of stoppage time at the Education City Stadium, Son Heung-Min’s wait was finally over. For the previous ninety, he had barely had a chance to do what he does best and run at a broken and splintered defence. Now, with half of it caught upfield for a set-piece, finally, here was his chance, writes Mark Critchley in Doha.

Son burst away, darting towards Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa, yet even his furious pace was not at full pelt after a gruelling final game in Group F that had appeared headed for a draw. White shirts began to crowd him. He had run into traffic. But thankfully, he had Hwang Hee-Chan in support.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers forward’s late finish and Uruguay’s mere two-goal victory over Ghana - eventually confirmed five minutes or so after the sound of the final whistle, to a joyous Korean huddle in the centre circle of the pitch - was enough for Asia’s most successful footballing nation and its biggest star to reach the last-16.

Son did not score the last-gasp goal that sent South Korea to the knockout stages of a World Cup for only the third time in their history - he is still waiting for his first in Qatar - but given his tears of joy at full time, you imagine he will remember this as the most important assist of his career.

Luis Suarez endures rollercoaster of emotions as Uruguay suffer cruel World Cup exit

17:24 , Luke Baker

The devilish grin painted across his face in the first half soon turned to sheer panic and then despair as Luis Suarez processed Uruguay’s fate. Out of the World Cup on goals scored, to the delight of South Korea, Suarez was agonisingly close to one last inspiring performance, writes Jack Rathborn.

The divisive forward had earlier cackled in delight after inspiring a two-goal lead, thrilled to play the role of the “devil” at the expense of Ghana once more. But that joy would turn sour after Hwang Hee-Chan’s late, late winner for South Korea, who usurped La Celeste to finish behind Portugal in Group H.

For so long Uruguay’s saviour, Suarez had delivered when most had dismissed him as merely an enigmatic presence in a camp between generations, having hopelessly toiled away against South Korea and Portugal.

Goalless and desperate for three points, Diego Alonso pinned his hopes on Suarez one last time. Having made a career of tormenting opponents with his belligerent workrate, Suarez was forced into Plan B with his legs betraying him.

Ghana vs Uruguay player ratings: Giorgian de Arrascaeta shines but both teams head home

17:19 , Luke Baker

Uruguay suffered late heartache as they exited the World Cup despite winning 2-0 against Ghana.

A missed first-half penalty by Andre Ayew ultimately proved the African side’s best chance of progression, with Giorgian de Arrascaeta scoring twice in quick succession thereafter at the other end to take the game away from them.

But South Korea nabbing a late winner against Portugal meant both teams needed another very late goal of their own - two in Ghana’s case - and the game became wildly open in the closing stages.

Edinson Cavani thought he should have had a late penalty himself and then spurned a shooting chance, as both nations ultimately go home early.

Here are the player ratings from the final Group H game:

Ghana haunted by Uruguay again as World Cup history repeats itself

17:13 , Luke Baker

On paper, Ghana could not have asked for a better chance against Uruguay, writes Jamie Braidwood. As Andre Ayew stood over the penalty spot, history was there to be rewritten. It was the moment Ghana dreamed of: the chance, perhaps not to heal the scars of Johannesburg, but to move on and leave them behind. The opportunity to knock Uruguay out of the World Cup was one that was raised when the group stage draw was made months, for it to arrive when their own progress was on the line added a sense of ambition to their lust for revenge.

On paper, a penalty, from 12 yards, at 0-0, was as clear an opportunity as you could imagine.

But this was not just any penalty, and this was not just any World Cup fixture. Ghana had not been denied a goal this time, unlike when Luis Suarez punched the ball off the line 12 years ago. Mohammed Kudus was instead taken down by the Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet when he was running out of pitch, close to the byline. The end result was the same. A Ghanaian stood with the ball, facing a Uruguay goalkeeper.

Ayew was an unused substitute that night in Johannesburg, watching on as Asamoah Gyan clipped the crossbar, and the chance to reach a historic World Cup semi-final slipped from their grasp. Suarez would have been yards away. Ayew may even have heard his yelps as he celebrated in glee after his red card went unpunished. The Uruguay striker had been cast as “the devil himself” before this Group H decider - he has haunted Ghana ever since, as much as Gyan’s miss.

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

A deflated atmosphere here as both teams crash out. Luis Suarez was in tears on the bench when he found out Hwang Hee-chan had put South Korea in front and then at full-time when Uruguay’s exit was confirmed

FULL-TIME! Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

17:04 , Luke Baker

It’s over! Both teams are out as South Korea go through. Heartbreak and Luis Suarez is in tears on the bench.

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

17:03 , Luke Baker

90+10 mins: De La Cruz hits it... On target but saved easily.

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

17:03 , Luke Baker

90+9mins: Gomez fouled. Last-chance saloon for Uruguay about 25 yards out. Have to hit this free-kick

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

17:02 , Luke Baker

90+8 mins: One last chance for Uruguay? A hopeful ball smashed forward runs harmlessly through to Ati-Zigi. We’ve passed the eight minute-mark of injury time. There were only eight minutes signalled.

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

17:01 , Luke Baker

90+7 mins: CLOSE! Cavani with some space on the right, he plays the ball across the box to Coates - of all people up there - but under pressure from the defender, his shot squirms wide.

Kudus taken off for Ghana as Issahaku comes on. 60 seconds left.

SAVE! Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

17:00 , Luke Baker

90+6 mins: Now it’s Rochet who pulls off a good save! Sulemana thumps one at goal from 20-odd yards and Rochet is strong to his left. Ghana need two goals, remember. Uruguay just one.

SAVE! Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:59 , Luke Baker

90+5 mins: This is end to end now! A brilliant block at one end as Ghana pour men forward before, at the other end, Ati-Zigi brilliantly down to his left to save from Maxi Gomez.

Tips it behind for a corner, which comes to nothing. Breathless stuff!

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:58 , Luke Baker

90+3 mins: Uruguay lump a free-kick forward but eventually it runs through to Ati-Zigi in the Ghana goal. Five minutes of added time left.

South Korea 2-1 Portugal

16:55 , Luke Baker

It’s all over in the other game. Hwang Hee-chan has won it late on for South Korea and as it stands, Korea are going through.

There are 6 minutes left and Uruguay need a goal to go through instead.

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:54 , Luke Baker

90 mins: There’s 8 MINUTES of added time here. Ghana need two goals to go through, Uruguay need one goal - otherwise both are heading out.

SAVE! Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:53 , Luke Baker

89 mins: Uruguay pour forward and WHAT A SAVE from Ati-Zigi. De La Cruz dinks in a cross to Cavani six yards out but Ati-Zigi brilliantly tips the header over the bar. How has he stopped that?

Ah, looks like Cavani was offside, not that Ati-Zigi would have known that. The goalkeeper lands awkwardly on his neck and shoulder - it looks painful. He seems to be ok after being checked out by the physio though.

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:51 , Luke Baker

87 mins: Everything has changed here. Both teams looking for goals now. Both teams currently going out. Uruguay have taken off Suarez and Nunez, remember.

Coates gets a yellow card for bringing down Sulemana after some good skill. Sulemana then also booked. Free-kick in a dangerous position but Kyereh’s cross is too far and goes out of play before Salisu can get there.

South Korea vs Portugal

16:49 , Luke Baker

OH MY WORD! They’ve done it! South Korea have scored!

Hwang Hee-chan makes it 2-1 to the Koreans against Portugal in injury time and Korea are going THROUGH on goals scored ahead of Uruguay.

Uruguay need a goal here now. DRAMA!

South Korea vs Portugal

16:48 , Luke Baker

Ghana need two goals here, remember, and time is running out somewhat. Uruguay currently heading through but a goal for South Korea in the other match - where they’re currently 1-1 with Portugal would send the Asians through on goals scored...

That game is into six minutes of added time

SAVE! Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:46 , Luke Baker

81 mins: Really good save by Rochet to keep it at 2-0. Uruguay lose the ball in a dangerous postion, it falls to Kudus who takes a touch to get the ball out form under his feet and fizzes a shot goalwards from about 20 yards. It’s heading into the bottom corner until Rochet springs to his right to push it wide - good goalkeeping.

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:45 , Luke Baker

80 mins: De Arrascaeta and Nunez are subbed off for Uruguay. The former’s two goals might just have sent his side into the last 16

Maxi Gomez and Agustin Canobbio on in their place.

CHANCE! Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:43 , Luke Baker

79 mins: Ghana are probing without creating anything gilt-edged. Sulemana turns his full-back inside out but the clipped cross is well cleared.

But then there’s a real CHANCE! A lucky ricochet comes the way of Semenyo in the box, to the left of the goal and he goes for the far corner but pulls his shot wide.

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:40 , Luke Baker

75 mins: Sulemana wins a corner for Ghana with a bit of trickery down the left. They need to make the most of these sort of opportunities. This one is cleared and Uruguay break but good defending by Amartey on Nunez to snuff out the danger

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:37 , Luke Baker

71 mins: We haven’t seen enough from Kudus in this second half - he’s Ghana’s most likely source of a breakthrough. He finally works himself a bit of space about 20 yards out but slashes at the shot and it flies high and wide.

A couple more substitutes for Ghana as Daniel-Kofi Kyereh and Antoine Semenyo are on for Inaki Williams and Salis Abdul Samed.

SAVE! Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:35 , Luke Baker

69 mins: Oooh, that could have gone wrong for Ati-Vigi. Valverde volleys a dipping shot from outside the area that awkwardly bounces in front of the Ghana goalkeeper but he gets his body behind the ball and pushes it away. He had to keep his eye on that

CHANCE! Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:33 , Luke Baker

68 mins: Maybe set-pieces can get Ghana back into this? They win a corner and it’s not cleared by Uruguay. The ball falls for Partey but his touch is heavy as he tries to bring it down about eight yards out and it runs through to Rochet.

CLOSE! Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:31 , Luke Baker

66 mins: Best chance of the second half for Uruguay! In fact, Pellistri should score. Some quick passing in the box and Pellistri fires into the side netting from about 10 yards out. Golden chance and it would have killed off Ghana.

That’s Pellistri’s last contribution as he and “the devil himself” Luis Suarez head off to be replaced by Edinson Cavani and Nicolas de la Cruz. Will Suarez have another World Cup match or is this his last?

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:28 , Luke Baker

64 mins: Great ball in by Sulemana from the left, curled into a really dangerous area. It goes over Rochet and is just beyond the stretching Bukari at the back post. Promising for Ghana.

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:26 , Luke Baker

62 mins: Good block from Gimenez as Sulemana tries to get a cross into the box. Uruguay will be content with time continuing to tick away for the moment, although a Korea goal would change their outlook.

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:24 , Luke Baker

60 mins: Suarez now in the book for kicking the ball away after Ghana awarded a free-kick. In news that will surprise no-one, he’s been niggling away all day and it has been coming.

PENALTY SHOUT! Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:23 , Luke Baker

57 mins: Uruguay want a penalty here. Ball over the top for Nunez to chase, Amartey in close attendance - they’re jostling, Amartey lunges across and Nunez goes down in the box. A bit clumsy and he may be in trouble.

The referee gets a word in his ear and goes to the monitor to check for a penalty... NOT GIVEN! He has a look and deems it no foul. Maybe Amartey gets the slightest of touches to the ball... Or perhaps handball from Nunez as he initially brought the ball down? Either way, Ghana survive.

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:20 , Luke Baker

56 mins: Salisu clips a ball over the top and Sulemana makes a great arcing run to stay onside. Uruguay keeper Rochet gets there first but flaps at the bouncing ball and collides with Sulemana. It’s hacked out for a throw though.

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:19 , Luke Baker

55 mins: Salisu goes through the back of Suarez for a free-kick in a central position about 35 yards out. Too far out to have a go at goal?

Yes, as Valverde clips the ball into the box, it’s nodded back across goal but Ghana clear.

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:17 , Luke Baker

53 mins: Uruguay sitting deep and Ghana knocking at the door early in this second half. No answer so far though.

Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:15 , Luke Baker

51 mins: Sulemana and Bukari have both taken up very attacking positions alongside Inaki Williams. Ghana have to throw the kitchen sink at this in all fairness as they need at least a draw to stand any chance of going through.

They’re having more possession at the start of this second half than they did in the first.

CLOSE! Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:12 , Luke Baker

46 mins: Much better start to the second half from Ghana and Bukari almost scores seconds after coming on. He fires a shot at goal from the right side of the area but it blazes wide of the far post.

Kudus was sliding in to try and get a touch, although he may have been offside but the shot itself wasn’t far away.

KICK-OFF! Ghana 0-2 Uruguay

16:10 , Luke Baker

Back underway for this crucial 45 minutes. A couple of changes at the break for Ghana as the Ayew brothers are both off, with Osman Bukari and Kamaldeen Sulemana entering the fray.
