Exclusive-US seeks to block Hezbollah ally from naming Lebanon finance minister, sources say
Washington is pressuring top Lebanese officials not to allow Hezbollah or its allies to nominate the country's next finance minister, five people with knowledge of the matter said, in an attempt to limit the Iran-backed group's sway over the state. The unusually direct U.S. intervention in Lebanon's sectarian politics appears aimed at capitalizing on shifts in the power balance in Lebanon and the wider Middle East, with Iran-backed Hezbollah badly pummelled from last year's war with Israel and its Syrian ally Bashar al-Assad ousted from power. Like all of Lebanon's main factions, the armed group Hezbollah has long named ministers to government, in coordination with its Shi'ite ally the Amal Movement, which has picked all of Lebanon's finance ministers since 2014.

French nuclear giant EDF lifts production forecast for 2025 and beyond
France's EDF has raised its nuclear production forecasts for 2025 and beyond, after a strong rebound in output in 2024 and its new Flamanville 3 reactor came online. The state-owned power giant lifted its production forecast late on Thursday to between 350 and 370 terawatt-hours (TWh), up from the 335-365 TWh previously expected for 2025 and 2026. EDF has faced challenges in recent years with its maintenance schedule, but this winter has been marked with strong nuclear production that helped French baseload power contracts trade lower than their German counterparts.
