Marvel fans are getting a surprise: the first action-packed trailer for "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings."

In honor of "Shang-Chi" star Simu Liu's 32nd birthday Monday, Marvel Studios released a first glimpse into the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film starring its first leading Asian superhero. The upcoming martial arts film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton tells the story of a martial artist trained since childhood by the Ten Rings terror organization to be an assassin.

The teaser introduces Shang-Chi (Liu), a valet attendant attempting to live a normal life in San Francisco. However, he soon realizes he can't escape his true identity as an assassin and must confront the past he thought he left behind.

"I gave you 10 years to live your life, and where did that get you?" Shang-Chi's father and leader of the infamous Ten Rings, Wenwu (Tony Leung), asks at the start of the trailer.

"You walked in my shadow. I trained you, so the most dangerous people in the world couldn't kill you. Son, it's time for you to take your place by my side," Shang-Chi's father says.

The film also stars Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, as well as Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.

Liu took to Twitter to share his excitement.

"Whoever said that you could only RECEIVE presents on your birthday? Today, I’m giving you your VERY FIRST LOOK at the teaser poster for @ShangChi and the Legend of the Ten Rings!!" he wrote Monday.

"Shang-Chi" is part of Marvel's Phase Four, a group of Marvel films featuring productions set to be released from 2021 through 2023. Delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" is set to release in theaters on Sept. 3, 2021.
