The Apprentice has received its first trailer, with Sebastian Stan looking transformed in the role of Donald Trump.

The biopic follows the former US president in his formative days as a real estate businessman in 1970s and 1980s New York City, also detailing his relationship with prosecutor Ray Cohn (Jeremy Strong).

Ahead of its release next month (October 11), the first trailer shows Stan - best known for his role as Bucky Barnes in the MCU - adorned in fancy suits and a blonde wig for the part, with Strong showing his ruthless side as the crooked Cohn.

“The origins of Donald Trump are brought to life in a provocative, electrifying portrait of the man and his mentor, Roy Cohn – a notorious lawyer who will never let the truth get in the way of winning a fight,” reads the logline for the film.

Described as a “gripping, darkly funny tale of greed, power and the dark art of the deal”, The Apprentice also stars Maria Bakalova, Martin Donovan and Charlie Carrick, with Ali Abbasi - best known for Border and Holy Spider - serving as director.

The director, who also helmed 2016’s Shelley, spoke about his latest feature in an interview with the Los Angeles Times following a screening at the 51st Telluride Film Festival, sharing that the film wasn’t a “political hit piece”.

“This is not a political hit piece. It’s in the nature of politics that you sort of streamline things to get a certain effect, in order to gain power or regain power,” he explained. “And that is really not the project here. We are all interested in exploring the complexities.

“This is an experience and it’s an experience of the complexity of these characters. Also, for me as an outsider, this was my chance to look at the American system and the utter corruption that has been an institutionalised part of it, at least from my perspective.”

The Apprentice is released on October 11 in the US and October 18 in the UK.
