Will Sean Payton be the next Dallas Cowboys coach? Social media reaction is certain
The reaction was immediate.
As soon as news broke that Sean Payton was stepping down as head coach of the New Orleans Saints, speculation on him taking over the Dallas Cowboys exploded on social media.
Payton’s deal with the Saints runs through 2024 so any team hiring him would need to pay off the remainder of his contract.
Payton, 58, was an assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach for Bill Parcells’ Cowboys staff from 2003-05, before taking the Saints’ head job in 2006. He was 152-89 in 15 seasons with the Saints, including nine playoff appearances. His 2009 team won the Super Bowl. His teams reached the NFC Championship Game three times.
Payton has long been a target of Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, according to multiple reports over the years.

Sean Payton easily becomes top coaching candidate for Cowboys or Raiders, but what would they have to give Saints in compensation? Is he worth two first-round draft picks?

Thus begins the "lives in Dallas and in place to take over in 2023" storyline that will hover over the entire operation for the next 12 months. #BePrepared #OrderYourChineseFood https://t.co/qsH5QyWLZJ

Being reported that Sean Payton retiring from Saints. OK, Cowboy fans, let the rumors begin. Who wants to start? “I have a friend who’s friend’s mom knows a realtor who she cat sits for who is friend’s with another realtor who said Sean Payton was looking at houses in Frisco.”

I'm thinking Mike McCarthy coaches the Cowboys for one more year then (assuming Dallas doesn't get to the Super Bowl), Sean Payton takes over the next season! https://t.co/IXIodl7qMm

Cowboys fans watching Sean Payton step down thinking they have some chance of luring him to a catastrophic franchise that would inevitably squander his talents

Sean Payton is under contract through 2024 with the #Saints. If another team wanted to swoop it, they would need to compensate New Orleans. But that’s a conversation for next offseason. https://t.co/7v8gr8GW0c

There were teams who knew that Sean Payton was trying to figure out what he wanted to do next and that he wanted to possibly leave New Orleans. Based on multiple conversations with league sources, there were teams that explored ways to make a move and hire the 58 year old.
