Scotty McCreery’s hit ‘Five More Minutes’ inspires Hallmark film. We’ve got details.

It’s been four years since the song “Five More Minutes” gave Scotty McCreery his first No. 1 single on the Billboard country chart.

Next month, the song will serve as the title and inspiration for a movie on the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel, Billboard reported. McCreery will serve as an executive producer but is not set to appear in the film, Billboard reported.

“Five More Minutes,” released in 2017, was the first single off McCreery’s 2018 album, “Seasons Change.” While the Garner native had scored hits since winning “American Idol” in 2011, he had never nabbed a No. 1 single on the country charts, The News & Observer reported.

“Five More Minutes,” a tribute to McCreery’s late grandfather, changed that streak, kicking off a string of chart-topping songs from “Seasons Change,” which included “This Is It” and “In Between.”

According to Billboard, the film tells the story of a woman’s holiday wish that’s “answered in unexpected ways when her late grandfather’s journal is discovered, revealing a previously untold romance.”

It will star Nikki DeLoach and David Haydn-Jones, both of whom have starred in numerous Hallmark Channel movies, and is expected to air on Nov. 20, at 10 p.m.

The news of the film comes as McCreery is riding a new wave of success from his latest album, “Same Truck,” his fifth studio album that was released in September. That album produced his fourth No. 1 single, “You Time.”

Monday, McCreery announced he would launch a 15-city tour in Raleigh in support of the new album. The tour will kick off at The Ritz in Raleigh on Jan. 20 with Kameron Marlowe as the opening act.

The inspiration behind ‘Five More Minutes’

Before he released “Same Truck,” McCreery reflected on his 10-year career since winning “Idol,” when he was just a teenager. He called his experience so far “an amazing ride,” with lessons learned along the way.

That includes writing and recording more personal songs, which started when he partnered with Monty Criswell and Frank Rogers to write “Five More Minutes.”

“One of the things I always knew and have believed, but really learned over my last record with songs like ‘Five More Minutes’ and ‘This Is It’ and ‘In Between’ — the songs are just so personal to me,” McCreery told The News & Observer in September. “I wrote them in my heart, from my perspective, my life.”

The emotional song was inspired by his grandfather’s death, with McCreery singing for “five more minutes” at various stages of life, ending with the plea for “five more minutes” with his grandfather.

“With so much left to say I prayed, Lord, I ain’t finished. Just give us five more minutes,” the song goes.

He told The News & Observer in 2018 that he got teary-eyed the first few times he sung it, including during a performance at the Grand Ole Opry

“I think certain times it will still get to me when I think about life like that,” he told The N&O then. “But nowadays, when I sing it, I kind of look at the spotlights when they’re shining, and to me, it might be a little weird, but I kind of look at it as Granddaddy looking down on me when I’m singing. It kind of gives me a little comfort.”

McCreery said in September that fans tell him every day how much those personal songs resonate with them, and how they helped them during pivotal times in their lives.

“So I think it’s a message we all need to hear, that we’re all on the same team here, we’re all a lot more alike than we are different,” McCreery said. “Let’s build each other up instead of tear each other down.”
