Scarlett Johansson Is The Highest-Grossing Female Movie Star Ever

Scarlett Johansson has entered the list of the top 10 highest-grossing movie stars of all time.

Data from the Box Office Mojo website finds that after gathering together the US grosses of the movies the ‘Avengers’ star has appeared in, she’s bankable to the tune of $3.3 billion (not adjusted for inflation).

Not only is she the only woman in the top 10, but at the age of 31, she is also the youngest on the list by 20 years.

Here’s the top 10 in full:

1. Harrison Ford - $4.9 billion (£3.6 billion)
2. Samuel L. Jackson - $4.7 billion (£3.5 billion)
3. Morgan Freeman - $4.4 billion (£3.3 blliion)
4. Tom Hanks - $4.3 billion (£3.2 billion)
5. Robert Downey Jr. - $3.9 billion (£2.9 billion)
6. Eddie Murphy - $3.8 billion (£2.8 billion)
7. Tom Cruise - $3.6 billion (£2.6 billion)
8. Johnny Depp - $3.3 billion (£2.4 billion)
9. Michael Caine - $3.3 billion (£2.4 billion)
10. Scarlett Johansson - $3.3 billion (£2.4 billion)

The next female on the list is Cameron Diaz, at number 19, whose movies have coined in just over $3 billion (£2.2 billion) in all, followed by Helene Bonham Carter at 26 with an accumulated gross of $2.8 billion (£2 billion).

Speaking to The Wrap, movie business analyst Paul Dergarabedian said:

“Johansson has perfectly and seamlessly balanced her impressive career with indie films. Working with noted filmmakers like Luc Besson, Christopher Nolan, the Coen Brothers and Woody Allen and she tops it off by starring in major Marvel powered box office blockbusters and other popular films, most recently 'The Jungle Book’.

“Add it all up and Johansson’s career diversification plan has delivered huge overall returns at the box office and thus catapults her to among the highest grossing stars working today.”

Jennifer Lawrence, whose career thus far has been arguably as lucrative in recent years, but much shorter in all, lands at 55 on the list, with a gross of $2.3 billion, behind the likes of Cate Blanchett ($2.8 billion), Julia Roberts ($2.7 billion), Elizabeth Banks ($2.7 billion), Emma Watson ($2.6 billion) and Sandra Bullock ($2.4 billion).
