This SC restaurant is on the Yelp top 100 US places to eat in 2023 list. Here’s why it’s great

A fried chicken joint in South Carolina has cracked Yelp’s top 100 places to eat in the U.S. ranking this year.

Yelp, an online publisher of crowd-sourced restaurant and business reviews, for the last decade has released an annual list of the 100 most popular and highly rated restaurants, according to its users.

While states like Florida and California have multiple restaurants on the 2023 ranking, South Carolina only managed to squeeze one eatery onto the list.

So, which lucky Palmetto State restaurant was chosen?

Boxcar Betty’s in Charleston earned the honor, coming in at 92nd on the list.

“This casual restaurant has taken the Charleston area by storm with a build-your-own menu of perfectly seasoned antibiotic-free and cage-free chicken sandwiches designed to please everyone,” Yelp states.

Customers can start with a choice of fried or grilled chicken, then add tasty and unique toppings like bacon jam, Kentucky beer cheese, peach coleslaw and others to give their sandwiches a real flavorful kick. And for vegetarians, the chicken can be replaced by a pimento cheese-stuffed portobello mushroom cap.

Other items on the menu include smash burgers and sides like fried pickles and sweet potato fries.

“Heard people say this place was good but good is an understatement,” one Yelp reviewer wrote. “This was the best fried chicken sandwich I’ve ever had. I was not expecting a piece of fried chicken to be that juicy or huge!”

If you’re curious about which restaurant snagged the top spot on the list, Broken Mouth, a Hawaiian-Korean cafe in Los Angeles came in 1st this year.

Yelp noted in its 2023 ranking that island cuisine dominated the top five for the first time this year. Among those was Kaaloa’s Super Js Authentic Hawaiian Food in Hawaii, known for its juicy laulau, which is pork wrapped in taro leaf. Another was Adela’s Country Eatery in Hawaii, which has gained a following in part because of its colorful “10-star” noodles made with local ingredients.

To create the top 100 places to eat for 2023 list, Yelp reached out to its users about their favorite dining spots. Then Yelp ranked each one by total number of submissions, ratings, reviews and geographic representation, among other factors.
