Saw X director defends record-breaking runtime

Saw X director Kevin Greutert has addressed his film's record-breaking runtime, revealing the latest chapter in the franchise was supposed to be longer.

A direct follow-up to 2004's Saw, Saw X takes place mere weeks after the events of the first movie, showcasing John Kramer aka Jigsaw's revenge when he finds out a miracle cure for his cancer is actually a scam.

X has a runtime of 118 minutes, being officially the longest film in the torture horror saga. For comparison, the first movie, directed by James Wan, closes in at a breezy 90 minutes.

"Well, believe it or not, the film was a lot longer at first," Greutert told The Direct about Saw X.

"And this is very new for me because every film I've ever directed came in a lot shorter than I wanted it to.

"So, in the case of this one, we spent so much time writing it and shooting it... the first cut of the film was super long... This film came in longer than I had intended it to, we shot a lot on the set."

Greutert — who was also behind the camera for Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter — then revealed he had to "trim down" the script of X, sharing his hopes that fans of the saga won't find his new gory outing too long.

"There were a lot of script pages and just a lot that we wanted to capture. So, I had to trim the film down and take out some scenes and shorten some scenes more than I wanted," he said.

"So, I'm hoping that even though the film is almost two hours long, it doesn't feel bloated or that it drags anywhere. You know, because this was sort of the cream up the footage that we shot."

Saw X is released in cinemas on September 29.
