Sanditon is returning to television, two years after ITV announced that it would not be renewing the Jane Austen adaptation for a second season.

In news that will no doubt thrill lovers of bracing period dramas everywhere, PBS has confirmed that Sanditon will be returning for a second and third season. The series, based on Austen's unfinished novel of the same name, was originally cancelled in 2019.

The new instalments will air on Masterpiece on PBS in the UK, but UK viewers will be able to watch the new seasons, with the series announced as a BritBox Original. Not only that, but ITV – which launched the drama – will also air episodes following Sanditon's premiere window on BritBox.

Sanditon writer Justin Young, who's also worked on the likes of Death in Paradise, will lead the two new seasons as head writer and executive producer. Original creator Andrew Davies will also return to write a number of episodes and executive produce.

As for the plot, the new seasons will pick up where the first left off, continuing with the story of Austen's heroine Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams), as she returns to the picturesque coastal resort.

"Charlotte's journey is one thread of an intricate tapestry of compelling stories full of intrigue, excitement, and romance," an official description teases.

"Against the backdrop of beautiful vistas, familiar faces return and new inhabitants are introduced – all of whom will be having adventures as joyous and surprising as the seaside town itself."
