Sam Thompson has responded to the criticism he faced following his interview of Dune: Part Two stars Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler.

The star, who won the most recent series of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, interviewed the pair as part of Hits UK’s coverage of the blockbuster, which is released in UK cinemas on Friday (March 1).

The move has been criticised in some quarters, with social media users claiming that an individual associated with the film industry should be undertaking the interviews and other press related matters.

“I actually feel sorry for journalists that have pursued the career, been through the schooling, got the degree and have realistically no chance of getting anywhere without major roadblocks because all the opportunities are being given to unqualified Reality TV and TikTok ‘stars’” wrote one user on X/Twitter.

Sam responded to the comment in jest, writing: “You should have seen the bit where I asked Timothy if he wanted to play Call of Duty with me, you’d have loved it,” but his response was condemned as several fans noted he had spelt Chalamet’s name incorrectly.

“Maybe acknowledge your lucky position and do something to help up and coming journalists instead like retweeting their work or following their accounts, just an idea,” wrote one user.

“While you don’t deserve the hate you’re getting on here, as it’s not your fault. Surely you can see why those that show a real passion for film/art, may feel a bit aggrieved?” added another, with several echoing similar sentiments.

Sam also responded to another widely criticised clip shared from the interview, in which he asked Chalamet how his off-screen friendship with co-star Zendaya affected their on-screen relationship in the film, with the actor saying there was “no good answer” to that.

Dune: Part Two is in cinemas on March 1.
