Sacramento braces for an ‘ugly day’ as storms return to Northern California

This weekend will be a wet one for Sacramento.

Two storms are expected to hit the area starting Thursday, bringing in a few inches of rain to the Sacramento area, according to the National Weather Service.

“Saturday is going to be pretty wet,” said Cory Mueller, a meteorologist at the weather service’s Sacramento office. “I would expect rain pretty much the entire day, it’s going to be a pretty ugly day.”

The first storm is expected to come into Sacramento Thursday evening, and is predicted to start at around 4 p.m. It could drop about a quarter inch to a half inch of rain throughout Sacramento. Temperature highs will be at 53 degrees with lows at 43.

The peak of the first storm will be into the late evening Thursday and early morning on Friday, Mueller said.

Then, a second storm will start Friday night at around 10 p.m. and is expected to bring one to two inches of rain through the weekend in Sacramento. Temperature highs will be in the mid 50s with lows in the mid 40s throughout the weekend.

Saturday will be the peak of the storm, with winds in the 30 to 35 mph range.

Travel into the mountains is highly discouraged this weekend, especially Saturday, Mueller said. There will likely be whiteout conditions Saturday throughout the sierras.

During the first storm, on Thursday, the mountains are expected to get get six to 12 inches of snow on the higher peaks . Temperature highs will be 38 degrees with lows at 17.

The second storm however is predicted to bring three to five feet of snow through the weekend. In South Lake Tahoe, temperatures will stay in the mid 30s with the high on Saturday at 40 degrees. Lows will stay between 17 and 19 degrees through the weekend.
