Sacramento-area CHP investigates death of pedestrian hit by freight train in North Highlands

The California Highway Patrol was investigating the death of a pedestrian who was struck by a freight train Tuesday afternoon in North Highlands.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District was called to the train collision about 1:15 p.m. at Roseville Road and Myrtle Avenue, just west of Watt Avenue.

The pedestrian was struck by a Union Pacific Railroad train, said Officer Justin Fetterly, a spokesman for the CHP North Sacramento Area Office. He said the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fetterly said he did not have any further details about the fatality, including whether the pedestrian was a man or a woman, an adult how fast the train was moving when it hit the pedestrian.

This was second time in three days that a Union Pacific Railroad train fatally struck a pedestrian in the Sacramento Area. That fatality occurred about 1:30 p.m. near the Cottonwood Estates mobile home park in Sacramento. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday had not yet released the identity of the pedestrian who died.
