Sacha Baron Cohen Sneaked In His Ali G Outfit For The Oscars

It seems that the audience might not have been the only people shocked by Sacha Baron Cohen’s turn at the Oscars.

According to the actor and comedian he was asked by organisers to come on stage as himself, rather than one of his more unpredictable alter egos such as Borat, Bruno or most recently, football hooligan Nobby from ‘Grimsby’.

But disregarding such requests, instead he sneaked his do-rag, goatee and specs into the Dolby Theater and made his wife, actress Isla Fisher an accomplice.

Speaking to This Morning after the ceremony, he said: “The truth is we actually had to sneak it in because the Oscars sat me down before and said they didn’t want me to do anything out of order.

“They wanted me to actually present it as myself. But luckily my wife put on the Ali G beard in the disabled toilets so we managed to get away with it.”

He even ran the gags by host Chris Rock before hitting the stage.

“I mean there were a few moments I was a bit worried how they’d react to the first gag, but I bumped into Chris Rock actually on the way on and pitched him the gag and he gave me the thumbs up so I went for it,” he added.

There was indeed some nervous laughter during his 'bit’, accompanied by a largely silent Olivia Wilde.

“Ow come there’s no Oscar for dem very hard-working little yellow people with tiny dongs,” he asked. “You know, the Minions.

“I is here representing all of them that’s been overlooked. Will Smith. Idris Elbow. And of course that amazing black bloke from Star Wars… Darth Vader.”

He then raised his fist in a 'black panther’ salute.

It was perhaps good exposure for the comedian, considering that he’s got a new film out.

And it appears it might need all the help it can get, with 'Grimsby’ providing the poorest box office opening of his career so far.

It made just £2.7 million over its opening weekend, less that even his debut movie 'Ali G Indahouse’.

The movie, which also stars Mark Strong and Rebel Wilson, has had a decidedly mixed reception from critics too.

While the Evening Standard said 'it’s consistently funny and it doesn’t outstay its welcome at just 83 minutes’, Sight and Sound was less impressed, calling it 'witless rubbish’.
