Sacha Baron Cohen reveals 'incredibly awkward' experience with fellow Golden Globe nominees

Sacha Baron Cohen appeared Thursday on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and discussed the downside to the virtual Golden Globe Awards. The actor took home awards for Best Picture and Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. While the night was a huge success, he admitted the video-chat room he shared with his fellow nominees was kind of awkward.

“We were all wishing each other luck,” Cohen said. “Then, actually, after I'd won both of them, they put me back in the room with the other nominees and it was incredibly awkward.”

The virtual award show received mixed reviews from critics and the ratings were way down. The pandemic has been challenging for award show producers, as the events normally feed off the energy and excitement of celebrities being packed in a theater together.

As for virtual chat rooms for the nominees, Cohen made it clear that experience needs some tweaking. Apparently his fellow nominees went from supporting each other to hating him.

“I was just saying, listen, guys, we're all winners,” Cohen said. “But they hated me. They hated me.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on ABC.
