Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington on Sky Sports: “They played very well, it’s a tough loss for us. They played better than us. The team did everything I could ask of them. Their spirits were high, they worked together, I couldn’t ask for anything more.

“It was always going to be a tall order, this was a strong US team and a lot of things went against us. The US had momentum all the time, you wonder if the crowds were part of that. The reality is the US played better than us. I can walk away comfortable with all my decisions. It’s a small consolation.”

Ian Poulter on Sky Sports: “Congrats to Team USA, when you look at the points they have outplayed us this week. They owned each session and we were left a mountain to climb. You always feel you have a chance and we needed to come out strong, they played better than us. It was always going to be hard this week, and it was tough.

“Don’t set me off - it’s tough. You put a point on the board and that’s nice but it doesn’t mean anything. I’m unbeaten in singles but this is a team week and it’s deflating. We’ve got a good young team who are going to take this forwards. I wanted to come here this week and give everything, you don’t know if you will get the opportunity to go again.”

“I just... I love being a part of this team. I love my team-mates so much. I should have done more for them this week.

“I am glad I put a point on the board for Europe today, but I just can’t wait to get another shot at this.

“It is... by far the best experience in golf and I hope little boys and girls watching this today aspire to play in this or the Solheim Cup because there is nothing better than being part of a team, especially the bond we have in Europe.

“No matter what happens after this I am proud of every single one of the players that played this week, I am proud of our captain and vice-captains.
