RWE places electrolyser order with Linde in hydrogen push

FRANKFURT, Jan 31 (Reuters) - RWE, Germany's largest power producer, has ordered two 100 megawatt electrolysers from Linde that are needed to produce green hydrogen, it said on Tuesday.

The two electrolysers are to be commissioned in 2024 and 2025, respectively, and are to be located on the premises of its gas-fired power plant in Lingen in the industrial Ruhr region, RWE said.

No financial details were disclosed. As a rule of thumb, 1 megawatt of electrolyser capacity is worth around 1 million euros ($1.09 million) but prices have gone up since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

RWE said that while the order was placed despite an outstanding decision over public funding, the decision was necessary to meet commissioning dates in case the project will qualify for support under EU state aid law.

"We are determined to make a tangible contribution to the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy by commissioning our plant in time, and are waiting for confirmation from Brussels," Sopna Sury, chief operating officer of RWE Generation, said.

Germany is looking at hydrogen as a major source of future energy to power its industry, hoping some local firms, including Thyssenkrupp and Siemens Energy, can benefit from an expected boom in the technology. ($1 = 0.9211 euros) (Reporting by Christoph Steitz Editing by Paul Carrel)
