Russell Crowe's 2023 horror movie The Pope's Exorcist will be getting a sequel.

Producer Jeff Katz took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the news last week, writing: "Amorth Nation -- I just got the call. IT'S OFFICIALLY HAPPENING!!!

"Thank you to the amazing #ThePopesExorcist fans. You made this happen. Gas up your Lambretta - and get ready to ride."

Directed by Julius Avery, The Pope's Exorcist is based on the real-life story Father Gabriele Amorth, a catholic priest who is said to have performed over 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican. The movie takes inspiration from his works, An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories.

The movie sees Crowe take on the role of Father Amorth, portraying him as a motor-scooter-riding right-hand man to the Pope, who travels to Spain to deal with a demonic possession taking place in a fictional abbey.

Daniel Zovatto (Station Eleven), Alex Essoe (The Haunting of Bly Manor), Franco Nero (Django Unchained) and Laurel Marsden (Ms. Marvel) also starred.

The movie's ending also left things open for a potential sequel, with Father Amorth shown in possession of a map that leads to 199 other evil sites that he had recovered from the abbey.

Crowe had previously revealed that The Pope's Exorcist was originally intended to be a trilogy, telling The Six O'Clock Show last month that there was enough source material to create more films.

"We set that character up that you could take him out and put him into a lot of different circumstances," he said.

"And remember that the man that’s based on – Gabriele Amorth – he wrote twelve books. So we have more than enough source material to do one or two more of those films. But that probably won’t be until next year."

The Pope's Exorcist is available on Netflix in the US.
