Good Girls fans, this is a goodbye no one saw coming.

Ahead of the season 4 finale, TVLine reported that NBC is not renewing the dramedy for a fifth season. In other words, this week’s episode of Good Girls is the series finale. After news broke last month that the show was canceled, fans went off on Twitter.

“They really canceled #GoodGirls?!” one person wrote. “WHAT?!?!??? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO,” another added. “WHAT?! THIS IS THEIR BEST SHOW!! 🤬,” a different fan said. “OH MY GOD WHY ARE DOING THIS TO US?!?! IT'S SO GOOD AND IT'S GOING TO BE GONE NOW,” a follower commented.

Many folks began calling for Good Girls to move networks and used the hashtag #savegoodgirls. “We need a s5 to wrap the stories up!!! @nbc @Netflix @hulu @PrimeVideo @IMDbTV @hbomax @HBO #SaveGoodGirls,” another wrote. “We need answers! We need SEASON 5! #saveGoodGirls #GoodGirls,” someone else said.

So why did NBC cancel Good Girls ahead of season 5?

According to TVLine, NBC and its studio Universal Television were planning for the dramedy to end with a fifth and final season consisting of eight episodes. There was even word that the network had “unofficially signed off on a plan” in late May and production was aiming to begin in spring 2022. But then a month later, money issues reportedly led to the cancellation news.

“[We] very much wanted to bring Good Girls back for one more season to close out the story but unfortunately we were unable to make the financials work,” an NBC insider told TVLine.

As for if the show could ever move over to Netflix, Deadline reported that NBC and Netflix couldn’t make the numbers work either. The relationship between NBC and Netflix is also the reason Good Girls isn’t being shopped around to another network or streaming platform. Per Deadline, back when the show was still at its pilot stage in 2017, NBC and Netflix signed a distribution deal. So with both platforms saying that financials aren’t in their favor, it appears to be the end of the road for Good Girls.

That said, there are also unfounded rumors that money wasn’t the only reason the show ended. TVLine reported that actor Manny Montana, who played Rio, allegedly wasn’t willing to take a pay cut like his fellow costars Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman and Retta. The speculation is that Manny and Christina, who portrays his on-screen love interest Beth, have a “strained working relationship.” Because of this alleged off-screen conflict, Manny was less inclined to agree to the lower salary to make one last season. Upon hearing this, NBC reportedly pulled the plug on the show. An insider later revealed to TVLine that “creative issues” were indeed part of the reason that NBC canceled Good Girls.
