Every good drag queen has to start somewhere and for RuPaul Drag Race UK star Blu Hydrangea her start into drag involved Kermit and Miss Piggy!

Speaking on Reality Check, the Northern Irish queen said she travelled to Limerick in Ireland to take part in a drag contest as there wasn’t much going on in her home-town.

“In Northern Ireland, there's not many opportunities for drag,” explained Hydrangea.

“I travelled five and a half hours with my boyfriend and my little suitcase of drag in the back seat. I gave her [Blu] this little mutant Miss Piggy/Kermit baby - and I snatched the crown because I do a great Miss Piggy impression!”

The look queen said her journey into drag started at university, when she used to sketch out images of fabulous drag queens.

“It all started here with teenage Josh, sitting in his lectures at university drawing drag Queens,” said Hydrangea.

“I wouldn't pay attention to the lectures because I wasn't interested. What I was interested in was drag. I was obsessed and this was my only outlet at the time.”

Hydrangea did some modelling at a local drag bar and then set up her Instagram account, showcasing her fabulous looks. With 347,000 followers, Hydrangea knows a thing or two about finding your drag queen character. Her top tip is to start on a budget.

“Go into Poundland – just like I did,” she advised. “It's not embarrassing, don't worry, and buy your whole kit.”

“I had really cheap face pants, one black and one white, and I used to just sculpt into my face so I could see where the light and the dark areas needed to be.”
