New Rothesay restaurants open to 'crazy' demand

Two new quick-serve joints have opened in Rothesay, boasting fresh and flavourful twists on traditional food.

Cheese Curds Gourmet Burgers & Poutinerie and its sister restaurant Habaneros Modern Taco Bar opened on Wednesday at 93 Hampton Rd.

The new eateries are owned by the Nova Scotia-based company, Chef Inspired, a family-owned group of restaurants and food trucks, including Gecko Bus, Upstreet BBQ Brewhouse, Studio East Food + Drink, and Terra Rossa Trattoria.

CEO and founder Bill Pratt emphasized the new restaurants' menus are not made up of fast food, even though the focus is on takeaway. Rather, the focus is on great quality and fresh, house-made food.

"We cook raw chicken, and raw beef and raw pork, and we make our sour cream and salsas and cook our rice and everything, in-house," said Pratt, adding the wide-open kitchen allows customers to watch their food getting made.

"We want to show people what we're doing. We're going to make those burgers and pound them on site. We're going to chip those fries, and you're going to see them."

The spot in Rothesay is the second location of the franchise, with the other in Oromocto, both of which are managed by Rick Kirkpatrick. The chain has five locations in Halifax and one in Truro.

Plans are in the works to expand into New Brunswick, with sights set on Moncton, Saint John, Fredericton and Bathurst, said the CEO.

Opening day on Wednesday in Rothesay was "crazy," Pratt said.

Right now, the emphasis is on providing takeaway food – driven mostly by the COVID-19 pandemic trend of curbside pickup – but there are a couple of tables and chairs for patrons to sit at and eat. Pratt said there will be picnic tables added outside in the spring.

"We got a little bit slammed. There was a pent-up demand. People want to try something different."
