The Rookie fans were left on the edge of their seats when Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) took their friendship to the next level in the season 4 finale. Whether or not #Chenford is the real deal is unknown, other than the fact that the two are currently working an undercover op and have to pose as a couple. But there is one thing for certain — the ABC procedural drama is returning later this year with a season 5!

Aside from Chenford's future, there are many other questions still unanswered. Will Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) come back after maternity leave? Will she continue to be Aaron Thorsen (Tru Valentino)'s T.O.? What's up with John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan)'s relationship? How is Mid-Wilshire going to function without Tim or Lucy there? It's a lot to take in and hopefully, season 5 will provide some resolutions very soon.

If you’re ready to find out more about what’s in store, read on to get all the details about The Rookie season 5:

When will season 5 of The Rookie premiere?

Get ready, because The Rookie season 5 will officially air on Sunday nights this fall, starting on September 25 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.

The show's Instagram announced the highly-anticipated news in early June, less than a month after the drama concluded its season 4. "When you hear that the season premiere of #TheRookie is Sept 25 on ABC 👏 Who can't wait to tune in?!" read the caption.

Ahead of The Rookie’s season 4 finale, ABC gave the drama an early renewal in March. Similarly, the show spread the exciting news on its official Instagram account. “This news = ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #TheRookie is officially returning for season 5 on ABC!” the caption read.

Nathan Fillion, who plays LAPD officer John Nolan, celebrated the announcement on his own Instagram. The actor shared a heartfelt message dedicated to his fellow Rookie cast members and fans.

“I couldn’t be more proud of what we have accomplished with this show,” he wrote. “Congratulations to our cast, crew, writers, producers, casting directors, directors, and everyone who has lent their talents to #therookieabc over the years. This job brings me real joy, I look forward to many more episodes with you all.”

Nathan continued: “I’d also like to thank the fans who keep coming back. You keep watching ‘em, we’ll keep making ‘em. #therookieabc #season5 #holycrap And thanks to ABC for the early pickup! It’s such a good feeling!”

To top it all off, The Rookie gave fans a sneak peek into season 5 with an official trailer in late August. The trailer showed our favorite characters picking up right after the events of season 4. Tim and Lucy are now undercover. Nolan is assigned a case which prompts the unexpected return of a former villain — and that's only the beginning. Take a look at the first look below:

Who will be in the cast of The Rookie season 5?

At the moment, The Rookie season 5 cast looks like it will include:

  • Nathan Fillion as John Nolan

  • Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez

  • Richard T. Jones as Wade Grey

  • Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper

  • Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen

  • Eric Winter as Tim Bradford

  • Jenna Dewan as Bailey Nune

  • Shawn Ashmore as Wesley Evers

  • Tru Valentino as Aaron Thorsen

  • Lisseth Chavez as Celina Juarez

One actor who's definitely coming back for season 5 is Tru Valentino, who had a recurring role throughout season 4 as rookie officer Aaron Thorsen. Fans may remember his character being accused of murdering his roommate in France. Though he eventually proved his worth to his training officer Nyla Harper, it's clear he has a long way to go.

Deadline first made the official announcement of Tru's bump to series regular in July, and the show quickly confirmed it the same day via an Instagram Reel. "We're sure @tru_valentino is sticking around 😉 Who's excited to see more of Aaron Thorsen on #TheRookie?! 👇," the show captioned the clip.

In addition, a new character will be joining the precinct this coming season. In August, the drama confirmed Chicago P.D. star Lisseth Chavez will be appearing in multiple episodes. She will portray Celina, a new rookie who has a unique method of doing police work. Despite the high marks she received at the police academy, her unorthodox ways will become a challenge to her training officer.

Did The Rookie season 5 begin filming?

Eric Winter confirmed The Rookie cast started filming season 5 via an Instagram Reel posted on June 21. Given how he's dressed in Tim Bradford's undercover gear, we can only expect to see how that plays out within the first few episodes of the season.

"I don’t think there is a better way for me to come back for season 5 of The Rookie… Day 1…Dim Day 2 Bradford," he captioned the video. "Vamos S5 💪🏼💥." ("Vamos" translates to "Let's go" in English.)

What's more, the next day, Nathan and Melissa posted a clip of themselves from the show's set. "We're on a very special lot," the actress said. "We're on a new location but what why this is exciting is that today is day two. It's officially day two on season 5 of The Rookie."

Any spoilers for The Rookie season 5?

During a panel at Comic-Con, Nathan Fillion opened up about the new season, and he accidentally spilled about a freshman rookie his character will be training at Mid-Wilshire.

"She ... ," he said before quickly taking his words back and saying, "Sorry, spoiler."

So, we know whoever is coming in will be a woman. How will she interact with Nolan and the rest of the crew? Will she interfere with Nolan and Bailey's relationship? We have so many thoughts about this, and we'll most likely get answers with Celina, the newest rookie joining the force.

But what can we expect from the new season? The Rookie executive producers Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter gave clues about upcoming storylines. According to Alexi, Nyla will have a fun storyline regarding her pregnancy, which was revealed in season 4. She also confirmed an arc featuring Wesley Evers taking a stab at policing from the legal side of things.

As for Chenford, we may just see Lucy and Tim's romance finally play out onscreen. "Obviously, we left quite the cliffhanger last season with the kiss which we’ve been building up to," Alexi said. "There will definitely be some repercussions and fallout from that."

Speaking of our favorite potential new couple, there might be some details of where they left off alongside a few other storylines. In August, the show released a season 5 teaser, and it looks like there is a lot of drama coming our way.

Aside from seeing Chenford portray lovers while undercover, we'll get to witness Nolan being rewarded for his work in the stand-off during the season 4 finale. But while he has the ability to take on any assignment he chooses, an old foe is back and ready to put all his loved ones at risk.

Our interests have been peaked!
