The Rookie spoilers follow.

The Rookie boss has responded to the season three finale and its major cliffhanger that aired on Sunday night (May 16).

Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) and Wesley Evers' (Shawn Ashmore) wedding plans didn't go as they'd hoped, after Angela went missing shortly after La Fiera escaped, and the story left many viewers with questions.

Speaking to TVLine, The Rookie showrunner Alexi Hawley explained why they wrote the disappearance into the script even though they weren't confirmed for season four at the time (last week the show thankfully did get picked up for its fourth season).

"You know, sometimes you've got to dream big," Hawley said. "It felt like a way to bring people back ultimately, plus we gave everybody a wedding – well, the beginning of a wedding – to be happy about, so there you go.

"We've been setting up the La Fiera story all season, so it just felt like we should go for it."

When asked if shows should incorporate cliffhangers into finale episodes, Hawley said that networks "make the decisions they make regardless", and added that writing in happy endings is often better for fans in case show gets cancelled.

Hawley explained: "Honestly, I think they make the decisions they make regardless, ultimately. I mean, I don't want to get back into the end of Castle, but there were two endings that we came up with.

"Terence [Winter] and I basically made a decision that we needed to shoot the one that aired, which was the one with the happy ending, just in case. Nobody told us to, but you can imagine if we'd ended with [Rick and Kate] bleeding out on the floor of the loft – 'See you later, America!' That would have been bad.

"We felt super positive about this season. It was a very difficult season to make, for many reasons, but a lot of it went really well. I think it's both the hardest and the best thing I've ever done."

The Rookie airs on ABC in the US, and airs on Sky Witness in the UK. It can also be streamed on NOW.
