Trump vows to take over Gaza and create 'Riviera of the Middle East'
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President Donald Trump said the U.S. would take over war-ravaged Gaza and create a "Riviera of the Middle East" after resettling Palestinians elsewhere, shattering decades of U.S. policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and drawing regional condemnation. The shock move from Trump, a former New York property developer, was swiftly condemned by regional heavyweight Saudi Arabia which Trump hopes will establish ties with Israel. Trump, in his first major Middle East policy announcement, said he envisioned building a resort where international communities could live in harmony.

French oil major TotalEnergies expects to take a final investment decision (FID) on its Namibian offshore oil discovery in 2026, CEO Patrick Pouyanne said on Wednesday at a press briefing. The development would have a production capacity of 150,000 barrels per day, down from an initial 160,000 barrels per day discussed at its investor day in October. Pouyanne had previously targeted the end of 2025 for a decision on FID at a results call last April.

Jeweller Pandora forecasts lower growth in 2025 with Europe lagging US
Jewellery maker Pandora said on Wednesday that its growth and profit margin this year would be lower than last, forecasting sluggish European demand but stronger consumer sentiment in its biggest market, the United States. "It's a stronger consumer demand and sentiment in the U.S. than we see in Europe, and one would probably think that that's going to continue into this year," Pandora CEO Alexander Lacik told Reuters after the Danish company's fourth-quarter results. Pandora, known for its charm bracelets, posted operating profit in line with expectations for the key holiday shopping quarter, but said Black Friday discounts had driven a bigger share of sales, weighing slightly on profitability.

UK denies Mauritius claims Britain could 'pay double' in new Chagos Islands deal
The UK has denied claims from the prime minister of Mauritius that it could end up paying double under a new Chagos Islands deal. The Foreign Office has said the figures being quoted are "entirely inaccurate and misleading" after Navin Ramgoolam said the new agreement would mean payments from the UK are "inflation-proof". It comes after Sir Keir Starmer was accused of "bending the knee" to Mauritius after Mr Ramgoolam said the UK prime minister "intends to push ahead" with the new agreement.

AMD shares dive as AI chip revenue disappoints investors
AMD, one of the biggest providers of chips for personal computer and servers, reported quarterly results and revenue outlook above analyst estimates, but that was overshadowed by its miss in AI chip-related revenue as investors scrutinized its results against Nvidia, which controls nearly 80% share of the market. The Santa Clara, California-based company reported fourth-quarter data center revenue - a proxy for its AI revenue - of $3.9 billion, compared to the consensus estimate of $4.15 billion. "AMD may still be taking market share from Intel in the central processing unit (CPU) side of things, but it remains a long way behind Nvidia and is struggling to catch up when it comes to graphics processing units (GPU)," said Ben Barringer, technology analyst at Quilter Cheviot.

UK services firms speed up job cuts but price pressures strong, PMI shows
British services firms lost momentum last month as a looming rise in employer taxes led to the fastest job cuts in four years but price pressures remained strong, according to a survey that underscored the challenge facing the Bank of England this week. "January data highlighted a challenging business environment for UK service providers as stagflation conditions appeared to take a firmer hold at the start of the year," Tim Moore, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said. "Businesses widely noted sharply rising salary payments and many also felt the impact of suppliers passing on forthcoming increases in employers' national insurance contributions," he said, referring to a key part of finance minister Rachel Reeves' first budget statement announced in October.

UK electric car sales rise in January but lag behind mandate, industry data shows
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported that volumes of battery electric vehicles (BEV) rose by 41.6% year-on-year to rise to a 23.7% market share. "Affordability remains a major barrier to uptake, hence the need for compelling measures to boost demand, and not just from manufacturers," said SMMT Chief Mike Hawes, as the industry called for a halt on EV taxes to encourage more people to buy the low-emission vehicles.
