The road to Glasgow begins here, says US climate envoy ahead of Cop26

America’s top climate representative has kicked off “the road to Glasgow” and Cop26 in November.

John Kerry, a previous US secretary of state and a presidential candidate in 2004, has been appointed as the special presidential envoy for climate, with a focus on the environment and energy policy.

Just hours after new US President Joe Biden took office in the White House on Wednesday, Mr Kerry tweeted about a new social media account he will be using.

He said: “Friends, today we get back to work. As I head back into government I’ll now be tweeting from @ClimateEnvoy.

“I hope you’ll follow me there and join me on the road to Glasgow!”

The tweet, which suggests at least Mr Kerry will be in attendance at the Cop26 summit in Glasgow, came after Mr Biden signed an executive order rejoining the Paris climate agreement.

Mr Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump controversially left the accord, which is designed to keep global warming below 2C.

It is understood no firm plans have been put in place around which US officials will attend the United Nations climate change conference Cop26, which was delayed from November last year due to Covid-19.

Commenting on the return to the Paris accord, Mr Kerry tweeted: “Today, @POTUS re-joined the Paris climate agreement, restoring America’s credibility and commitment – setting a floor, not a ceiling, for our climate leadership. Working together, the world must and will raise ambition.

“It’s time to get to work – the road to Glasgow begins here.”
