While many parents-to-be might want to avoid choosing a baby name that’s too common, they might also feel a bit aggrieved if the moniker that they’ve picked for their newborn makes the least popular list.

Parenting site BabyCentre has released its list of this year’s most unloved baby names that haven’t been registered on their database so far in 2017, putting them well and truly on the endangered baby names list.

A total of 24 baby names appear on the vetoed list; 14 girls’ names and 10 boys’ names.

Though 80s fashion has been having a reboot, the same can’t be said for some of the decades most popular monikers with Ian, Donna and Karen not making a single birth certificate.

When it comes to girls Edna, Bertha and Bonnie were some of the biggest female no no’s, whereas Bertram, Clarence and Clive all topped the boys no-go list.

Other girls’ names that have fallen out of favour with parents-to-be include Dorothy, Cynthia and Mildren, while Clarence, Edmund, Gus, Roger and Ricky are all proving a hard name sell.

Despite being made famous by supermodel Cindy Crawford, the name has plummeted in popularity, slipping into fifth place on the unpopular list.

Similarly Frank was the sixth most unpopular boys name on the list, despite having once making the top ten in the most popular list between the 1880s and 1920s.

Other names on the list offer a nostalgic reflection of celebrities who undoubtedly once had an influence on parents’ decisions when it came to naming their offspring.

Think Roger (Moore), Roald (Dahl) and Cilla (Black).

So if parents are choosing to shun showbiz names of yesteryear, what are they opting to name their children instead?

When it comes to newborn daughters, short and sweet, is the ‘name’ of the game with Ava, Isla, Misa, Evie, Lily and Ivy all placing within the top 20 most popular list.

For boys Freddie, Alfie, Theo, Archie and Charlie are all proving popular with modern parents.

The endangered baby names list follows the release of another list parents won’t be keen to make – the names grandparents aren’t loving.

A new survey by Mumsnet has revealed the names grandparents really aren’t digging and Charlotte, Jack and Lindsay have all made it.

The survey, which polled more than 2000 parents and grandparents, found that 19% of grandparents ‘hate or have hated their grandchild’s name.’
