Resident Evil origin movie in the works with Pirates of the Caribbean and Marvel stars

Resident Evil is getting the reboot treatment as a new film is being planned featuring Pirates of the Caribbean star Kaya Scodelario and Marvel's Hannah John-Kamen.

Constantin Film has announced that pre-production has already begun on a new movie titled simply Resident Evil, which will be an origin story and reboot of the film and video game franchise.

The film will be set in Raccoon City in 1998, the origin area of a zombie apocalypse which is spread as a result of a deadly virus and bioweapon unleashed by unscrupulous pharmaceutical company the Umbrella Corporation.

The film will be written and directed by 47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts and is set to be primarily based on the first two Resident Evil video games, with many characters from the games featuring.

Scodelario, who has also starred in Skins and The Maze Runner series, has been lined up to play Claire Redfield, while Ant-Man and The Wasp star John-Kamen will appear as Jill Valentine.

The Flash actor Robbie Amell has been cast as Chris Redfield while The Umbrella Academy's Tom Hopper is set to play Albert Wesker, Now Apocalypse star Avan Jogia will feature as Leon S Kennedy and The 100 actor Neal McDonough will join as William Birkin.

Roberts said of the adaptation: "With this film, I really wanted to go back to the original, first two games and the associated terrifying experience that I had when I first played them. And at the same time, I am telling the story of a small, dying American town that will appear both familiar and relevant to today's audiences."

The Resident Evil franchise began with the original Capcom video game Resident Evil, which was released in 1996, and there have since been many more games released with the next instalment, Resident Evil Village, due out in 2021.

The series was adapted into an action-adventure film series starring Milla Jovovich, which made some storyline changes but featured many of the characters from the game.

There is also a Resident Evil eight-part TV show in the works for Netflix, which is being helmed by Supernatural's Andrew Dabb.

The Resident Evil origin movie is due for theatrical release in 2021.
