Reports: Cleveland Guardians lock up 2B Andres Gimenez with long-term contract extension

Cleveland Guardians second baseman Andres Gimenez had a breakout season in 2022, winning a Gold Glove and being named to his first All-Star team.

Now he's reaping the fruits of his labor.

According to multiple reports, Gimenez and the Guardians have reached an agreement on a seven-year, $106.5 million contract that also includes a club option for the 2031 season.

It's the second-largest deal in franchise history, trailing only the seven-year $141 million pact third baseman Jose Ramirez signed last offseason.

Gimenez, 24, was one of the key players the Guardians acquired in the January 2021 trade that sent shortstop Francisco Lindor to the New York Mets.

In his two seasons with Cleveland, Gimenez has blossomed into one of the game's best second basemen.

Last year, he hit .297 with a .371 on-base percentage, 17 home runs and 20 stolen bases. He's also a skilled defender, which resulted in him finishing sixth in the American League MVP balloting.

With Gimenez and Ramirez signed to long-term deals – and reportedly in contract discussions with several other key players – the Guardians could soon be shedding their label as a low-payroll MLB franchise.

The youngest team in the majors in 2022, Cleveland surprisingly rolled to an AL Central title and pushed the New York Yankees to the limit in the division series.
