Report: Steelers interview former Browns coach Hue Jackson for offensive coordinator position

Former Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson may get another shot in the NFL. The Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly interviewed Jackson for the team’s offensive coordinator position, according to ESPN’s Dianna Russini.

If hired, it would mark the first time since the 2018 season that Jackson has held a coaching position in the NFL. Jackson was fired by the Browns that October. In three seasons, he led the team to a 3-36-1 record. Jackson joined the Cincinnati Bengals that November as an assistant to head coach Marvin Lewis. Jackson was let go by the organization shortly after Lewis was fired in December.

Since then, Jackson has stayed out of the NFL spotlight. He was set to run Colin Kaepernick’s free-agent showcase in 2019, but backed out once the workout was changed to a different location.

Hue Jackson had success as offensive coordinator

Jackson is most known for his abysmal stint as the Browns’ head coach. He has, however, had success as an offensive coordinator. Jackson’s most notable stint came with the Bengals, where he oversaw an offense that ranked seventh in points scored in 2015. He also coached an Oakland Raiders offense that ranked sixth in points scored during the 2010 season. Jackson took over as the team’s head coach the following year, and led the Raiders to an 8-8 record.

The Steelers are looking for a new offensive coordinator after parting ways with Randy Fichtner on Jan. 14. The Steelers won their first 11 games of the 2020 season, but largely slumped in its final six, including in the postseason. Pittsburgh lost four of its last five regular-season games, and saw its offense falter over that period.

Following a 48-37 loss to the Browns in the playoffs, the Steelers did not renew Fichtner’s contract. The team also parted ways with offensive line coach Shaun Sarrett. The Steelers reportedly want to hire an offensive line coach before naming an offensive coordinator.

Steelers quarterbacks coach Matt Canada is also under consideration for the open offensive coordinator position.
