Yahoo Movies Regina King is set to direct her second film
Regina King officially signed on to direct her second film, a feature adaptation of the award-winning Image Comics series Bitter Root, with production company Legendary Entertainment, Deadline reported.
The Watchmen star's new deal follows her directorial debut for the three-time Oscar-nominated Amazon Studios drama, One Night in Miami, for which she was nominated for both a DGA Award and an NAACP Image Award. King is additionally a four-time Emmy winner and the 2019 Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress for Barry Jenkins's If Beale Street Could Talk.
King will be producing the adaptation alongside Reina King, Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian, with executive producers Sean Owolo of Drapetomedia and series creators David F. Walker, Sanford Greene, and Chuck Brown.
Bitter Root was the 2019 recipient of both the Eisner Award for Best New Series and the Ringo Award for Best Series. Set in the Harlem Renaissance of 1924, it centers on the Sangerye family, who must fight against a supernatural force of evil that has for generations corrupted human beings by leeching off their crude prejudices, consequently transforming them into monsters. While hailing from a lineage of once-prolific monster hunters, the Sangerye family must reckon with past tensions and conflicting moral codes to successfully band together and defeat the ominous creatures that threaten a fatal epidemic in New York City.
The story of Bitter Root largely parallels that of HBO's 2019 series Watchmen, which King starred in as Angela Abar and won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for at the 72nd annual Emmy Awards. Both works depict the 1921 Tulsa massacre and address the parasitic propensities of racism. King's upcoming role as director for the comic's adaptation is likely to bring substantive new angles to her Emmy-winning performance.
