Reese Witherspoon has shared that she is getting a divorce from husband Jim Toth.

The Big Little Lies star posted a joint statement with her husband on social media on Friday (March 24) to announce they were ending their marriage after 12 years.

"We have some personal news to share," their statement began. "It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce."

The statement went on: "We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together.

"Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter. These matters are never easy and are extremely personal. We truly appreciate everyone's respect for our family's privacy at this time."

The former couple tied the knot in Ojai, California at the famed Libbey Ranch in March 2011, just over a year after they started dating.

At the time, Legally Blonde actress Reese said that her relationship with talent agent Toth took her by surprise because he isn't the traditional type she looks for.

"When I was 20, if you'd asked me ... I wouldn't have said Jim," Witherspoon said in a new interview with Elle a few months after the wedding.

"Jim's like, 'I'm gonna show you every day what a good partner is, what a good person is, I'm going to take care of you. I'm going to do it so much that you're gonna get used to it'. I was like, 'What are you talking about? I've never had anybody like that in my life'."

Reese and Jim have a 10-year-old son, Tennessee James Toth, and she also has older children Ava and Deacon from her marriage to Ryan Phillippe.

In between her marriages to Ryan and Jim, Reese had a high-profile romance with her Rendition co-star Jake Gyllenhaal for two years.
