‘I really wasn’t sure how much it was for.’ Kentucky man claims $1M lottery ticket

A northern Kentucky man, who wishes to remain anonymous, stepped forward Tuesday to claim the winning $1 million Mega Millions ticket, which had been unclaimed since the Aug. 5 drawing.

The man arrived at Kentucky Lottery headquarters in Louisville Tuesday — a requirement for claiming the prize — after purchasing it at a Kroger in Erlanger prior to the drawing, according to a news release.

“I saw the message, ‘prize exceeds cashing limit.’ I really wasn’t sure how much it was for,” the man said of trying to scan and confirm a win at the Erlanger Kroger.

The man’s winning ticket from the Aug. 5 drawing matched the five white ball numbers, but not the Mega Ball to win the game’s second prize, a KY Lottery news release said.

He purchased a $20 ticket with 10 sets of numbers and chose to let the terminal pick, an option called Quick Pick. The first set of numbers on his ticket were the winners.

“It’s amazing, and to think I sometimes forget to check my tickets and misplace them,” he told officials.

He walked away with a check for $710,000 after taxes. He tells officials he’s looking to buy a business with his winnings.

Kroger will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

This marks the second time in two weeks someone has claimed a winning $1 million Mega Millions ticket sold in Kentucky. The first was claimed by an Estill County woman Aug. 1. She also wished to remain anonymous.
