Rare white dolphin spotted off Southern California coast. See the video

While on an eight-hour whale-watching excursion, guests got a glimpse of a rare white dolphin off the California coast, according to a whale-watching company.

The almost all white dolphin named Blanco can be seen swimming with a large nursery pod of about 35 to 40 Risso’s dolphins off Dana Point in a video posted to Facebook on Jan. 23 by Dana Wharf Whale Watch.

Blanco,“believed to be the only one known off Southern California,” gets its rare color from a condition known as Leucism, according to the company.

The “abnormal condition of reduced pigmentation” is caused by a genetic mutation in animals that “inhibits melanin and other pigments from being deposited in feathers, hair, or skin,” according to Merriam-Webster. It results in “overall pale color or patches of reduced coloring.”

Blanco was first spotted off Dana Point in July 2020 and again nearly a year later in May, the company said.

“Over the past few years it has been seen off our coast from Dana Point to Long Beach, the southeast end of San Clemente Island and northeast side of Catalina Island,” according to the company.

Risso’s dolphins, which have a lifespan of “at least 35 years,” are found “worldwide in temperate, subtropical, and tropical oceans and seas,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They typically measure between 8 1/2 to 13 feet long and weigh between 660 to 1,100 pounds.

Dana Point is about 60 miles southwest of Los Angeles.
