Saskatchewan’s corrections and policing minister, Christine Tell, is facing continued calls for her resignation as COVID-19 outbreaks continue to impact inmates and staff at provincial jails. As of Jan. 2, 60 COVID-19 cases had been reported by the Saskatchewan General Employees Union at the Regina Correctional Facility alone, while the provincial government has also faced criticism for slow COVID test result reporting, and pandemic protocols within jails. Those numbers led to the NDP’s corrections and policing critical Nicole Sarauer to once again ask Tell to resign from her cabinet post. Tell did not respond directly to an interview request from The Forum, with a spokesperson from the province’s executive council instead responding with emailed comments from Tell. “I would like our inmates and their families to know that the health and wellbeing of our inmates in all of our correctional centres is always top of mind,” Tell said in the statement. “That is why we have taken a number of steps to reduce the risk of COVID-19 in our facilities, which includes mandatory masking, testing upon admission and as directed by public health authorities, quarantining new admissions for 14 days, and establishing temporary structures to provide flexibility in managing the correctional population.” Tell added that corrections staff offer regular information on COVID-19 measures and precautions, and ensure inmates can remain in contact with their family and loved ones through additional telephone calls, and free calls to elders and chaplains. Inmates started hunger strikes at jails in Saskatoon and Prince Albert in protest of the Saskatchewan government’s handling of COVID-19 in the corrections system, and inability to prevent the pandemic from spreading in those environments. Tell was previously quoted by Global News, calling the hunger strike, a “tray refusal”, while also expressing concern for the “health and safety of inmates and staff, which includes nutrition.” In the prepared statement to the Quad Town Forum, Tell added: “There is a process for offender complaints that is detailed in Part 8 of the Correctional Services Act. Alternatively, inmates may raise their concerns with the provincial Ombudsman. Corrections staff are dedicated to working with inmates to address their concerns, and we encourage them to work with staff towards the same goal.” Keith Borkowsky, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter, The Quad Town Forum
CLEVELAND — The Cavaliers are moving on from troubled and talented forward Kevin Porter Jr., a person familiar with his standing with the team told The Associated Press on Monday. The Cavs will either trade or release Porter, who has not played for them this season. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. A first-round draft pick in 2019, Porter rejoined the team only last week after tending to personal issues. He was in street clothes and on the bench Friday night when the Cavs beat the New York Knicks. Porter reportedly became angry when he learned the Cavs had moved his locker for newly acquired forward Taurean Prince, who came over in the four-team trade with the Brooklyn Nets earlier in the week. Following Monday's practice, during which the Cavs welcomed centre Jarrett Allen and Prince on the floor for the first time, coach J.B. Bickerstaff said he was disappointed things didn't work out with Porter. “We all want to see Kevin be successful and I still feel that way, so whatever it is that happens in the future for him, I hope nothing but the best for him,” Bickerstaff said. "It' part of our responsibility as coaches to give everyone our all and try to make the best of every situation and I can say that we did that.” The Cavs have always been intrigued by Porter's ability, but the 20-year-old has had issues off the floor. In November, he was involved in a single-car accident and police found a loaded handgun and marijuana in his car. Porter contended he didn't know the gun was there. Charges were dismissed. Cleveland drafted Porter with the No. 30 overall pick in 2019 knowing he had issues while at Southern California. As a rookie, he averaged 10 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 50 games. ___ More AP NBA: https://apnews.com/tag/NBA and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Tom Withers, The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA — Archie Bradley ingratiated himself with fans immediately after finalizing a $6 million, one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. “SignJT,” Bradley wrote on Twitter. The right-hander then expanded on his desire for the Phillies bring back two-time All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto. “Hopefully, me being on board, we can get our guy J.T. back,” Bradley said Monday during a video news conference. “I know him very well. Obviously, unbelieveable big leaguer. I’ve played with a lot of guys who have played with him that have done nothing but speak so high of what J.T. brings to the table not only on the field but off the field. Great dude. I hope he’s a Phillie. I hope I get to throw to him this year.” Phillies slugger Bryce Harper began campaigning for the team to re-sign Realmuto last season. A few times after he crossed the plate on Realmuto homers, Harper looked up in an empty stadium and screamed: “Sign him!” Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski didn’t comment on a report the team has offered Realmuto a five-year contract worth more than $100 million. He also said he doesn’t feel extra pressure to sign Realmuto because Bradley, Harper and others have made it clear they want him. “No, I don’t really feel any pressure by those comments,” Dombrowski said. “I think everybody knows that you’d like to bring him back – that’s not a secret. So, no, I don’t feel any extra pressure in that regard. We want to do everything we can to make our club better and I think we’ve expressed our desires in doing so, so we’ll do our best in that regard. But I don’t really feel extra pressure and I don’t blame them – we feel the same way as they do, so we’re on the same page.” Bradley was 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA and six saves in 16 games last season with Arizona and Cincinnati, and he earned $1,518,519 prorated from a $4.1 million salary. Bradley had a career-best 18 saves in 2019. The 28-year-old right-hander joins a bullpen that was among the worst in Major League Baseball. Philadelphia’s relievers combined for a 7.06 ERA, and the team blew three-run leads eight separate times. The Phillies ended up one win shy of qualifying for the post-season for the first time since 2011. Bradley is 23-25 with a 3.91 ERA and 28 saves in six seasons. He has 425 strikeouts in 412 innings. Phillies manager Joe Girardi didn’t say whether Bradley will be used as a closer or a set-up man. Hector Neris is Philadelphia’s other option. “I’m going to have a lot of opportunities to contribute, and ultimately, that’s what I want to do,” Bradley said. “I don’t care what role it’s in, but I want to take the ball, and I want to provide quality innings for this team.” ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Rob Maaddi, The Associated Press

Saskatchewan joined five other provinces in December, requesting that the federal government delay Bill C-15 until stakeholders and governments could be consulted on what the implications of the legislation are. Bill C-15 is proposed legislation that states the Government of Canada, “must take all measures necessary to ensure the laws of Canada are consistent with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.” It received a first reading in Ottawa on Dec. 3. When the measure was initially debated at the United Nation in 2007, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States all opposed it. National governments in all four opposing nations have since supported the declaration, which addresses individual and collective rights of Indigenous people, as well as their rights to culture, identity, education, health, employment and language. The UN declaration also states Indigenous people can determine their own political status as well as rights to engage in their own economic, social and cultural development, while retaining the right to be part of the same activities within the state. “While we support the principles of UNDRIP, as far as the Government of Saskatchewan, we don’t endorse the federal legislation because there was very little consultation done before the initial bill was presented,” Indian Head-Milestone MLA and provincial government relations minister Don McMorris told The Forum. “The interpretation of the legislation is still to be determined and we can’t support something until we know what the impact is going to be within our province.” The provincial government is reviewing the legislation and is trying to determine what this bill means for the province. It is also consulting with First Nations and Metis leaders as well as other economic sectors which could be impacted by this law, McMorris said. “The spirit is one thing, what the legislation says is another, and that’s why we can’t support this,” McMorris said, adding a further statement on this bill will be released once the province has completed its review of the bill. Similar reviews are underway in Manitoba, Ontario, Alberta, Quebec and New Brunswick — all provinces, like Saskatchewan, with conservative governments.
