Queensland Fishermen Amazed as Shark Frees Itself From Net

A group of fishermen on the coast of Queensland were shocked when their net captured a shark, and even more surprised when it managed to free itself from its predicament.

Rita Arnott told Storyful that the footage was captured on the coast of Tallebudgera, on the Gold Coast, as her boyfriend and two friends cast an “eight-foot” net on the night on January 26 to capture “live bait”, a net size that is legal in Queensland.

The initial idea of some “light-hearted fishing fun” however changed somewhat when the shark was “randomly caught”, with the group originally believing a stingray had become entangled in the net.

Arnott’s footage shows the small shark struggling to release itself from the net before escaping back into the water. Arnott said that the tear in the net that allowed for its freedom was caused by a “gang hook which you can see in the last second” of the video.

She said the group believed the hook “must have been lodged into the poor little fella prior to being caught in net”, adding that they were “stoked it made it’s own way out of that net and is swimming happily around our Australian coastline free from pain and humans.”

The group shared the footage was local TV though “s a friendly heads up for those swimming in Tallebudgera” the next day. Credit: Rita Arnott via Storyful
