It seems that while we were obsessing over Kate Middleton’s most recent royal ensemble, we missed something—Queen Elizabeth’s new jewels. OK, so we didn’t miss them per se, but we definitely didn’t pay enough attention.

Members of the royal family, including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, attended the Diplomatic Corps reception, an annual event for 1,000 guests including ambassadors, high commissioners and government officials, on Wednesday evening. The event, which took place at Buckingham Palace, was hosted by Queen Elizabeth.

The 93-year-old monarch entered the engagement wearing a white embroidered state gown by Angela Kelly and the emerald-rich Vladimir tiara. She accompanied the look with a previously unseen diamond and emerald necklace. The neckpiece featured a ring of 10 large emerald drops and resembled the famous Greville Emerald Necklace that was previously a favorite of the late Queen Mother.

However, the drop emeralds suggest that this necklace was either a reworking of the original Greville design or a completely different piece. See the new jewels below.

And here’s the original piece worn by the Queen Mother.

So, is this a new piece or the reworking of a classic? We need some clarification from the queen...
