PXG custom golf club store now open in Charlotte for its NC debut

A golf club maker is taking its swing in North Carolina with the debut of a Charlotte store as interest in the sport grows and more golf entertainment venues tee up.

PXG (Parson Xtreme Golf), based in Arizona, opened last month at 7101 MacFarlane Blvd. in University City, near Topgolf. The 7,546-square-foot facility sells only its brand of custom clubs, which are not available at any other retail stores.

“People are used to coming that way for golf already and it adds a little bit more to what is a golf hub that’s started in that area,” PXG vice president of U.S. sales Nick Jahnke told The Charlotte Observer.

Charlotte is PXG’s 21st store, which has opened 17 stores in less than two years, Jahnke said.

“When we’re looking for where to put (stores), we really want to look at the top golf markets around the country,” Jahnke said.

Local golfers are likely to be familiar with PXG.

“We’ve always had mobile fitters out of that area,” Jahnke said. “(The stores) are an investment in the customer experience.”

What to expect at PXG Charlotte

The PXG store has seven full-time fitters to offer one-on-one custom fittings, plus apparel and accessories.

“We’ve got every tool, shaft and head needed,” Jahnke said. “We build your set from the ground based on your needs.”

The store has three fitting bays with golf simulators powered by TrackMan technology and a practice putting green.

There’s also a 460-square-foot putter studio.

“We can offer a lot more customization than the industry is used to on putters,” Jahnke said. “Everything we do is custom whether you’re looking at one club or 14. We want to be able to work with you in person, and that’s where the store becomes so valuable.”

There’s also a customer lounge for relaxing and watching the latest golf tournament.

“Golf is a social sport so we welcome friends to come along,” Jahnke said.

Charlotte’s growing golf links

Since the pandemic shutdowns in 2020, golf’s popularity surged just as more golf-themed venues opened in Charlotte.

“Covid was a unique opportunity for people to rekindle what they loved about golf,” Jahnke said. “You see a lot of people that they were drawn back to it, but it also became a family outlet and it introduced kids to the game.”

Charlotte-based Rain or Shine Golf, a retailer and manufacturer of at-home golf equipment and accessories, for example, told the Observer revenue is up by 25% year over year in part due to the pandemic as well as virtual golf venues.

Two years ago, Topgolf opened its second venue at 9110 Drivers Way, near Ikea off Interstate 85. The first location in Steele Creek opened in 2017.

Several other golf venues have opened recently in the Charlotte area, including X-Golf America, Puttery Charlotte and Intown Golf Club.

Virtual golf venues have helped increase interest in the sport. “It’s giving people different inroads,” Jahnke said.

PXG isn’t the only new golf retail store in Charlotte. Last April, The PGA TOUR Superstore opened a 35,640-square-foot store at 5341 Ballantyne Commons Parkway.

And in September, some of the best golfers in the world competed in the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.

PXG is building on that momentum.

“It’s more in response to what the golf consumers have already built. It is a very passionate golf community,” Jahnke said.

PXG, which opened its 21st store in Charlotte, offers right- and left-handed golf clubs, including drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges, and putters, as well as high-performance, sport fashion apparel and accessories.
