Inauguration Day has arrived—and with it, a sea of purple. Vice President Kamala Harris attended the morning's church service in a purple ensemble from Black designers Christopher John Rogers and Sergio Hudson. Michelle Obama was spotted in a head-to-toe plum coat and suit also by Hudson, while Hilary Clinton showed up in a sleek purple pantsuit. And last night, incoming first lady Jill Biden bundled up in a magenta wrap coat from Jonathan Cohen. Why so much purple?

It isn't a coincidence that the leading political ladies are all sporting purple today—it's a symbolic gesture. Purple is the color of unity, a blend of the Democratic blue and Republican red. Harris, Obama, Biden, and Clinton have all stepped out in the bipartisan color (which is also a nod to the suffragette movement) to encourage Americans to unite together in 2021.

It's a trend that, given its meaning, should last well beyond Inauguration Day. If you want to incorporate the symbolic shade into your own wardrobe, here are some of the internet's most popular purple pieces, including some from top-rated Black-owned brands.

Where to buy purple coats and clothing

All purple everything, please.

For a look similar to that of Harris et al., you can find stunning purple coats and pantsuits at popular retailers like J.Crew (you can snag an eggplant Italian wool coat), Nordstrom (we're big fans of the purple Ugg coat, the classic Kate Spade trench coat and the Ralph Lauren wrap coat) and Macy's (like this Calvin Klein pantsuit that comes in both regular and plus sizes). There's also a purple suede belt that's similar to Michelle Obama's for sale at Neiman Marcus.

You can shop plenty of Black-owned fashion brands and businesses for purple pieces, too. Some of our top picks? This cozy purple loungewear from NaCIO Apparel, a violet Savage x Fenty sweatsuit that's Rihanna-approved, or the popular "Slap" (satin-lined cap) from Grace Eleyae that comes in purple and that Oprah listed as one of her favorite things of 2020.
