Princess Kate's full-bodied blow-dry was the perfect backdrop to her tiara

Catherine, Princess of Wales, has been wedded to bouncy brunette curls her whole royal life. When Kate chooses to wear her hair down for public appearances, it's nearly always styled in an iteration of this signature style, being centre or side parted, with glossy loose curls (as below). Ergo, her entirely different hairstyle displayed at yesterday's Diplomatic Corps reception at Buckingham Palace was a real head-turner.

Styled straight and sleek, without a parting, the look was quite the departure for the princess. The crown of her hair—behind her pearl-and-diamond Lotus Flower Tiara—was styled with body to achieve a voluminous sillouette. The effect was, fittingly, very princess-y. But it also nods to the Barbie trend increasingly dominating the fashion and beauty agenda.

Given how film and TV characters are inspiring trends more and more, it's predicted that 'Barbiecore' will continue its influence well into 2023 in line with the Greta Gerwig-directed film Barbie, starring Margot Robbie as the title lead, being released. For hair this means full-bodied blow-dries and high swishy ponytails now feel very of-the-moment.

Of course, achieving volume at the crown of the hair is a styling trick that has always been considered face-flattering. Whether done in a bedhead Brigitte Bardot-esque way, or with a polished, bombshell feel like Princess Kate's latest look, lifting the crown looks chic. This, stylist and Ghd ambassador Zoe Irwin tells us, is something her French clientele excel at. “What the Parisians do when blow-drying their hair is focus on the crown," she told Bazaar. "The more the crown is lifted, [the more] it counteracts the jaw.”

If you want to achieve such heights when styling your own hair, don’t be afraid to backcomb, super stylist Sam McKnight tells us. “Now, I’m not talking ‘80s style, even though that’s fabulous. I’m talking a little, just at the crown and into the roots. It’s the secret to thicker, fuller looking hair,” he confirms. Clearly Kate has been taking notes.
