Princess Diana carried her bag in her left hand for a very cute reason

From Cosmopolitan

Princess Diana's bags have long been a topic of conversation. From inspiring high end designs (such as Dior's iconic Lady Dior style) to popularising the idea of 'cleavage bags' (positioned over the Princess' décolletage to avoid any awkward photos as she climbed out of cars), Diana's purses were more than just places to store her keys and lipstick. And it turns out there's another important detail to note about her bags, specifically, how she carried them.

More often than not, the Princess of Wales was seen holding a clutch or top handle bag in her left hand. This is far from a coincidence, though, especially considering Diana was right handed. So why did she do it?

Royal etiquette expert Myka Meier - who trained under a member of the Queen’s Royal Household - says royals are actually encouraged to hold their bags in their left hand, Hello reports. Illustrating the point with photos of Diana at various public engagements, Meier writes:

"Royal Etiquette Hack: When entering a room or event, handbags or briefcases are held in the LEFT hand so that your right hand stays open to meet, greet and shake hands! Prince Charles does this too!"

Clever huh? I mean, it makes total sense. The Queen reportedly has a whole secret code for communicating with her security through her bag's positioning, so we can believe a little bit of open body language has made it onto the royal etiquette guide.

Of course, there would be circumstances where royals like Diana might have to hold the bag in their right hand, so it's not exactly a hard and fast rule but perhaps more of a personal preference.

By contrast, Kate Middleton changes up which hand she carries her bag in, as did Meghan Markle during her days as a working royal, but it's a fun nugget of royal life we didn't realise until now - the more you know!
